5, 21, 38, and B!
These are great questions thanks! I’m going to answer for my Bloodborne OC, Jason, because Bloodborne is what I’ve got my face glued to obsessively atm
5. How easy is it to earn their mistrust?
Very easy, but Jason doesn’t really take it personally. It’s built very deeply into his worldview that other people just don’t do trustworthy things, and people who seem nice at first can turn out to be cruel or hurtful. But why worry about it \(._. )/ it’s like finding bugs under paving stones; yeah; paving stones do that.
21. Why do they get up in the morning?
He doesn’t! He does things as he feels like doing them, for circumstances where he can get away with that kind of strategy (and present circumstances fit the bill). When he does put effort into things, it’s usually to satisfy curiosity. Or maybe out of a sense that other people would get very upset with him if he didn’t do the thing, to the point where the lazier option is doing the thing. He has an appreciation for being helpful to others, but he’s not reliable about it.
38. What memory do they revisit the most often?
Jason doesn’t have many memories (if any) where he’s sharing an experience with someone he likes and trusts, so he doesn’t really have any huge sentimental milestones about his place in his social group etc. His important memories tend to look like “one time I found a really cool rock, and I kept it for a good while, but then I lost it, and I still think about it sometimes; it really was a cool rock.” There’s comfort in keeping track of a nice assortment of experiences like these. There will always be more things to see and more cool rocks to find. Life’s not so bad. Except when it is; but why revisit that?
B) What inspired you to create them?
My Dark Souls I and II ocs both have purple hair, and I had a random thought that a new FromSoft oc could have really light pink hair and that would look cool. A fancy androgynous pretty boy lookin character didn’t feel super original, so Jason’s in his 30s or 40s (he neither knows nor cares how old he is). After I ordered Bloodborne and was waiting for it to arrive, I was trying to think of cool sounding words I could somehow get a name out of, and I came up with ‘boggle.’ I really liked how well it worked as a last name, and I called him Jason because it sounded nice with Boggle (and as a slight nod to Juuzou from Tokyo Ghoul, an excellent spacey monster hunter I’m sure I pulled some inspiration from) (there’s also a little of the gravedigger from Van Helsing in there too).
What really made all of these half baked ideas come together was the option to set your character’s backstory-at-a-glance to ‘waste of skin.’ I just had to pick it when I saw it was an option. Once that’s on the table, the other options start to look like “your character is traumatized, but they have the fucking decency to be socially acceptable about it, they’re conventionally sympathetic.” And fuck jumping through hoops basically. OK my character is SO worthless and SO terrible and I love him, so there. So now I’m playing a game where the hero of the story (1) has traits that recommend him for being utterly worthless in the eyes of people who think there’s such thing as an utterly worthless person and (2) has got what it takes to be the superstar hunter the game is about, in a world built around the premise that if you try hard enough yeah you can be that, anyone can be that. And things I figure out about Jason have to check both of those boxes, and there’s just so much to explore in that.
