I AM A GIANT SQUID OF ANGER RIGHT NOW.
My brother shared this on his facebook explaining how disgusted he is by it, and I completely agree. I know this commercial is controversial just to get people riled about it and draw attention to itself, but the insulting of religion is something that gets under my skin a lot. People always insult religion because it's "false" and "there's no way to prove there is a god." But you know what? A lot of people (including myself) love religion in their lives because it makes us feel more complete. It helps us live our lives more fully and gives us a place to turn to when we feel there is nowhere else to turn. To insult religion and consider it "stupid" or a "horrible" part of society is undermining the millions of people who love/need it in their lives.
I know a lot of people hate the Catholic church because of the "strict" rules and the whole priest sex scandal. But honestly, do you think every Catholic priest is a child molester? I've been an alter server for most of my life and not ONCE in the seven different locations I have lived in have I ever met a priest who was a creeper. Most of them are extremely nice and are committed to serving and dedicating their life to God. Furthermore, a lot of the "strict" rules are a very conservative interpretation of the religion. My family is quite liberal and we interpret our faith as WWJD rather than "I have to do XYZ or else I'll go to Hell."
Continuing on with my anger, this ad mocks one of, if not the most, blessed and sacred of all the Catholic sacraments: the Eucharist. Many people don't like it because "How can that actually be the body of Christ? You Catholics believe in a bunch of hocus-pocus magic." Let me explain something, ignorant ones: the Eucharist is our way of becoming more close to God. When you receive the Body and Blood of Christ, you are saying, "I believe in this faith, I believe God and Jesus, and am committing to this Catholic life and faith because Jesus died for our sins." That is a pretty powerful commitment! That is why there is a whole ceremony called First Communion when people (usually kids around the age of 7 or 8) first receive the Eucharist and make this commitment. To undermine and mock this powerful and moving vow with God, which millions of people perform every Sunday, is disgusting.
I am sorry if you are offended by this rant, but I felt like I should educate the public on this a little bit. People are always saying to "get over yourselves" when religion jokes are made. But they fall under the same category as offensive race and sexual orientation jokes. You ridicule a part of a person that is important to them and then shrug it off as not meaning anything. Religion may piss off some and not mean anything to others, but to a lot of us it is a part of our lives and it hurts when people consider it stupid and worthless.
So if you don't agree with religion, what do you do? BE A FUCKING RESPECTABLE HUMAN BEING. I can't emphasize this enough. If you don't agree with something, fine! Don't be a dick about it. Accept the fact that you don't like it AND MOVE ON. Don't be a douche and make fun of it. Don't be an ass and say it isn't worth shit. Accept that some people like having religion in their live and let it go. You gain nothing by being a prick.
If you wish to give your input on this, my ask is open. I am more than willing to discuss this issue if you don't agree with me.
