hot take probably but internalized homophobia is not... an excuse to just do whatever you want lol?? if you call people slurs, if you hate crime someone, if you spread harmful messages on the internet knowing full well that a young audience if following you, hell if it's even just one person you hurt with your words- you are still responsible for that and should be held accountable. you didn't lose control over your own autonomy, nobody is straight up forcing you to share homophobic rants on instagram. obviously we should have nuanced conversations about the way people weaponize religion against lgbtq people and brainwashing them into self hatred but it does not strip you of your own accountability especially if you definitely had chances to unlearn your prejudices, educate yourself and do better

i haven’t been a skam austin blog in awhile but i’m gonna keep posting about this austin terry (daniel) thing as long as i still have things to say.

one super common comment i’ve seen is “how does someone participate in a project like skam which is super accepting and inclusive of the lgbt community and then turn around and say shit like this?” and i think it helps to realize that skam austin ran 2018-2019 (probably started production in 2017) and while people can grow and change in a positive way, it is also entirely possible for them to change in the other direction and become more enmeshed in fundamentalist christian viewpoints. at one point in the full video (i haven’t watched the whole thing yet) when he’s talking about how christianity has impacted his life and worldview he says “over the past year” which especially supports my hypothesis that this belief is a relatively recent development for him during a year that was so hard on so many people’s physical and mental health. again, not defending him, not saying it’s ever okay to promote any sort of homophobia coming from any source, but like. mocking a deeply repressed texan 22 year old with maybe 2 acting credits to his name does not a big win for gay rights make.

Okay I just saw this one tweet and now I gotta talk about it

With the whole Austin being a homophobe situation people keep saying "I'm glad SKAM Austin got cancelled" and the bitter American me is like "y'all weren't saying that about the other problematic remakes!!1!1"

Someone said "I'm glad Skam Austin got cancelled. He doesn't deserve a platform on a show featuring LGBT characters" and the problem lies with admitting that the show features LGBT actors playing LGBT characters but then saying you're happy the show got canceled because ONE person doesn't deserve a spot on it. Cancelling the whole show not only takes away from the bad voices but it's also taking away the voices of Queer people... Its hypocritical.

Everyone keeps using him as an excuse to say they're glad the show got canceled. The beliefs of one actor does not speak for the show as a whole. Yall are just using this moment to justify your disdain with SKAM Austin :(
