Police in Austin, Texas are investigating the fatal shooting of a protester at a Black Lives Matter march. According to reports, 28-year-old Garrett Foster was shot and killed after a chaotic altercation with a motorist. He was attending the protest against police violence and had been pushing the wheelchair of his fiancée, Whitney Mitchell, 28, who is a quadruple amputee. Austin police are investigating what occurred between Foster, who they said was carrying an AK-47-style rifle during the protest, and the driver, who called police to report that he’d shot someone, reports Dallas News. Accounts have varied on what led to the shooting, police said. Witnesses reported just before 10 p.m. Saturday, a car turned down the street toward the protesters and the driver started honking its horn. The vehicle stopped in the roadway, police said, and Foster approached the driver’s side window as others began striking the car. The driver then opened fire, striking Foster. Foster was taken to the hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly after. Authorities said at a news conference Sunday that the driver reported Foster pointed his weapon at them before the shooting. KVUE-TV reported that police have said Foster did not discharge his weapon, but the chief did say someone else in the crowd did return fire as the car left the scene. Police said they have released the driver while they investigate what led to the fatal shooting. Sheila Foster, Garrett Foster’s mother, told #TheNews racial equity issues were important to her son. “He was going to these protests because he was fighting against police brutality,” Foster said. “He was pushing her wheelchair across the intersection when this happened. Thank God she didn’t get hit.” #GarrettFoster #austintx #austin #austinprotest #blacklivesmatter #blm #activist #unheardvoicesmag (at Austin, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDIKbaLHz9H/?igshid=c0sc9xsc8fga
Garrett Foster Dead in shooting at protest in Downtown Austin
Garrett Foster Dead in shooting The victim was identified as her mother, Sheila, who was speaking to Good Morning America on Sunday as Garrett Foster. A Black Lives Matter protest, which was shot and killed during a demonstration in Texas by a driver heading towards the crowd before opening fire on Saturday night, pushed his underbelly fiancee into his wheelchair a few minutes before shooting. Foster's mother said that her son had participated in several peaceful protests with her four-year-old fiancee Whitney Mitchell. Sheila said she pushed Foster's fiance just before he was shot deadly. Police spokesperson Katrina Ratliff told reporters early Sunday that during a protest in Austin, the fire took place just before 22:00. During the demonstration, a vehicle was honed, closed a road, and then accelerated towards the protesters, says Michael Capochiano. Vehicle protesters shouted, and Foster approached the vehicle carrying a rifle, Capochiano recalled. Then, according to Capochiano, the driver squeezed a gun from the car window and fired several shots, hitting the rifle before hitting the man. But according to Foster's mother, the man 'got out of his car and started shooting and my son was shot three times'. Foster was later taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Sheila told GMA that she wouldn't be surprised if her son was carrying a gun because he had a license to carry it and probably 'felt the need to protect himself'. Read the full article
Telling. “It’s a reminder that I fight for this cause with everybody else,” Jones said. #Repost @statesman • • • • • • Austin, Texas Stitches run through the center of 20-year-old Gemicah Jones’ Texas tattoo while standing for a photo at his apartment in East Ausitn on Thursday, June 4, 2020. On May 30th, Jones was attending a protest against police brutality with his friends when he was struck by a less lethal bullet. He was rushed to the hospital where he underwent an emergency surgery as the bullet had entered near an artery in his forearm. “I was screaming in pain,” Jones said. “My hand started violently shaking.” Austin-Travis County EMS officials said there have been at least 29 people hospitalized during the protests in the last seven days. Injuries caused by less lethal rounds include an open skull fracture with soft-tissue damage, a fracture to the lower jaw and a soft-tissue damage to the cheek, a severe hematoma between the brain and skull, and an open chest injury with broken ribs. Hundreds continue to take to the streets in the city’s second week of protests, condemning the APD for their use of less lethal rounds while continuing to protest police brutality and decry the deaths of George Floyd and Austinite Michael Ramos. “It’s a reminder that I fight for this cause with everybody else,” Jones said. #austinprotest #atx #texas #austin #protest #georgefloyd #mikeramos #blm #blacklivesmatter 📸 @brontewittpenn (at Austin, Texas) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBHnWI3FcHe4Onyf8PKvDsGgHdxfM6S0InTgAg0/?igshid=18wseofon8m7t
