Australian hops are all the rage these days. Cultivars like Galaxy are popping up in everything from wheat beers to saisons. Here in Oregon, Pelican Brewery replaced their Silverspot IPA with Umbrella, which uses only Australian Ella hops. And for their 19th Anniversary IPA, the brewers at Stone in San Diego set out to make an all Australian double IPA. Australian and New Zealand hops are prized for their flavor, but the flavors are often quite subtle. Can you still taste blueberry and white grape in 8.7% alcohol beer?
Sort of. Thunderstruck is quite aggressive on the nose, showing off the tropical, sweeter side of Australian hops, but with oniony undertones. The flavor is sort of dialed back for Stone, less bitterness and a heaping spoonful of sugar. The hops take a turn for the earthy on the palate, resinous and sticky. There is also the familiar grapefruit flavor, coming through an Australian filter, less like marmalade, more like yogurt. It’s quite filling. Maybe I should have drank it before I ate that burrito.
