Australian gothic
• you walk down the street. You think about how it hasn’t rained in a while. You realise it doesn’t rain here. You stare out into the bush. How is it still alive?
• There is two types of grass in Australia: dead or long. The dead grass says nothing as you walk over it. We do not speak about the long grass. We do not look at the long grass. We especially do not enter the long grass.
• A cockatoo flies by. It is black. That is not a cockatoo. That is a storm bird. You stare out into the clear blue sky. A storm is coming.
• There is a snake in a bush. It tells you to come closer. You do not listen and slowly back away. It is red and black. It won’t attack if you walk away. Be thankful it isn’t brown.
• You drink a spider. It taste like ice cream and sprite at first. You slowly realise it is furry. You look down into your glass. You were drinking a spider.
