Tutoring (PT. 2)
synopsis: js fluff since they are minors. tadashi is alive, reader is less skeptical than before
You had originally thought tutoring was going to be awful, but Hiro managed to make it bearable. He'd crack these stupid jokes and even thought about giving breaks. He knew when you needed one and was extremely patient. Though he was only your tutor, you had began seeking out his company more often than you expected. Hiro was good at explaining difficult concepts and so you picked up and understood things better. You felt guilty, sending him a text that you didn't understand and needed some more help with topics you basically mastered just to see him, but you so desperately wanted to talk with him and hang out.
You denied it at all times to yourself that you liked him. He was just every other tutor. But then again, you slowly started hanging out with him not only for the lessons, but like actual friends. And it was kind of nice.
Weeks pass by, and soon, you both were like best friends. People would look at you and see that, not knowing he was your tutor. Of course, they didn't expect a fourteen year old boy to be a tutor, but still. You definitely did not want anyone to know about all the photos of your hangouts on your phone. Especially the fact that you made a whole folder dedicated to them.
Now you were helping Hiro even sneak into your room unbeknownst to your parents, though they did notice that you weren't as angry at them lately and you didn't protest about tutoring. They just assumed you finally accepted your role of being a good daughter. But who cared? All that mattered was they never suspected anything. If they knew about your friendship, they'd think emotions would get in the way of your education and it didn't help they never approved of hanging out with boys outside of school.
Eventually, you started sneaking out to meet up with Hiro. You never expected he participated in illegal robot fights. And that he earned quite a bit. Like any normal person would do, you guys would use the money to buy your favorite candies: sour gummies and all kinds of gummies galore.
One night, he did bring you to his room to help you study, though it was more giggling, junk food and chatter. That's when his older brother, Tadashi, discovered his little brother had been hanging out with a girl. And he wasn't expecting a stubborn, sarcastic girl with messy, flaming pink hair. You politely said hi to him and Hiro looked like he wanted to disappear. Tadashi just shook his head and waked out the room.
Few hours after, you left his house and Tadashi came back up to the room to tease Hiro.
"So..." he began. Hiro groaned and dragged a hand down his face. "Don't start." Tadashi just gave him a knowing smirk before continuing anyways. "New friend? Or... girlfriend?" Hiro groaned louder and slumped back into the chair, scowling at his gleeful older brother. He was never gonna hear the end of this. Tadashi ignored him and went on about how cute you two were. He could deny it all he wanted, but secretly, Hiro enjoyed it. He didn't understand why.
He didn't understand why he had the urge to see you, how he'd get excited when he did but also shy and how he was beginning to lean towards the loud rock you listened to or how he couldn't help staring at you when he though you weren't looking. He didn't understand why he cared so much that you were doing good in school that he was extra patient and explained things so it became easier. The last time he tutored, he quit halfway.
You were infuriating in the best possible way, and he hoped you thought the same about him.
Days went by and you were completely enamored by him. The way he'd get excited when explaining stuff about robotics or computer science made butterflies flutter in your stomach. He was like a little puppy with a treat.
It went the same way with Hiro: he thought it was cute how you'd stick out your tongue out the corner of your mouth when drawing. You were like a little kid concentrated on their coloring. Luckily, he only paid attention to your face because at that moment, you were drawing him. And you may or may not have drawn him a couple times. Okay, a lot.
________________________________________________________________
One night, you were at Hiro's house again for some tutoring. You were struggling with a different topic, for real this time, and Hiro had decided to seriously help you. But your mind wandered and like usual, you were staring at Hiro, and not the papers and screen in front of you. Absentmindedly, you hummed in response to sound like you were totally concentrating. Yeah, totally.
"...See, that's where you're getting stuck," Hiro said, circling part of the equation with his mechanical pencil. "You're treating the exponent like it only applies to the number, but it applies to everything inside the parentheses." He began to explain. "Think of the parentheses like a box. Whatever's inside the box gets affected. You can't just… pick one thing and ignore the rest. Got it? You try now." Handing you the pencil, his hand brushed yours and there went the butterflies in a frenzy.
"Oh! Um, okay." How were you going to do what he explained if you weren't paying attention. You touched the tip of the pencil onto the paper, but then stopped. Turning to face an expectant Hiro, you asked "Can you repeat what you said? It sounded so... so nerdy."
A look of sheer surprise crossed Hiro's face and, oh my God, you wanted to smack yourself. You hadn't intended for your tone to come out flirty! Your mind was somewhere else and you thought how cute and attractive it was when he explained topics. He was dorky in a non-mean way.
"Nerdy...? I mean, yeah I guess." He replied, rubbing the back of his neck, another habit of his that you noticed. You cringed internally but kept a straight face as he went back to explaining the formula. What if he thought you looked stupid? Or he felt offended that you called him nerdy? And, again, what the hell was up with that tone?! You needed to gather yourself together.
If you weren't so self-conscious, you'd have noticed the tips of his ears turning red. Hiro's hands were moving and working while explaining things to you, but his mind was thinking, "Nerdy? What did she mean by that? Was she making fun of me? No... but why'd she say it like that?" He began to get a little flustered because you were paying more attention to him and not the problem at hand.
Moving closer to see your workings, you could feel his breath ever so slightly on your ear as he watched you writing out the formula and tried calculating. And it wasn't helping your nerves. Looking back at him, you met his eyes for his approval of what you did. For a second, you stared at each other before hastily looking away. Hiro cleared his throat and nodded and said weakly, "Yeah, yeah, looks good." And you could've sworn he glanced down to your lips.
You were very much going to replay this moment in your head over and over instead of sleeping.
