Time is embedded in our every day lives, it’s bedtime, mealtimes, classes and travelling. The Spartan has yet to fully understand the passage of time which leads him to either rush his tasks, not finish a task or become anxious which causes him stress which leads to meltdowns . Using and understanding how money works is part of becoming an independent individual. Studies have shown that increased independence is recognised as a predictor of future success in those on the Autism Spectrum. . As you can see building skills in understanding time and money is so crucial to our Spartan’s development. This is such a crucial time, that I made the the difficult decision to move into part time work this year as I was beginning to see that there was no way I could fully support the Spartan in his transition to high school and achieve our goals if I was working full time . At the beginning of the year I purchased some amazing resources from @kmartaus to help our Spartan build his understanding of time and money. Our Spartan is a visual learner so resources that are tangible and easy to understand was certainly the way to go in teaching someone who has poor working memory. The ‘Learning about money’ resource had Australian dollars which made the learning even more realistic. We also recently purchased a digital watch for Leo which has tremendously helped reduce his anxiety in managing time through his day at school and at home.
