The Misunderstanding of Autism and Empathy
It's a common misconception that individuals on the autism spectrum lack empathy. This couldn't be further from the truth. While it's true that some autistic individuals might struggle with traditional social cues, it doesn't mean they are devoid of empathy.
Many autistic people can experience intense empathy and emotional sensitivity, often feeling emotions so deeply it can be overwhelming. It's termed as 'emotional empathy' or 'affective empathy'. However, they might have challenges with 'cognitive empathy', which is understanding another person's perspective, or 'expressive empathy', showing their feelings in conventional ways.
Understanding the different types of empathy can help debunk this harmful stereotype and lead to better understanding and acceptance of autistic individuals.
