Hey so. The tussles/truffles/brussels gag from Volume 2. I think what was going on there was that Ruby just did not hear Ooblek and was trying to figure out what he'd said. They're in a loud flying vehicle and I'm pretty sure my girl has autism and that can fuck with your ability to "filter out" ambient noise... it makes sense

So I've seen a few people saying that Ruby could be autistic and I agree with them but also what if: Yang says in V5 that when Summer "left", Ruby couldn't talk. However, Ruby's flashbacks of her mother and the lyrics of Red Like Roses Part II imply she remembers her mother, possibly quite well. Babies start talking long before they start to remember things. It's possible that when Yang said Summer "left", she was only talking about Summer's various missions that she returned from, and she was lonely while Summer was away. But it could imply that as a child, until after Summer's death, Ruby was nonverbal.
Because of this, Ruby, Yang, Tai, and Qrow all know sign language.
