Anzac Day feels like an appropriate time to mention that I'm starting a new job next week. I'm now an historian with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

No idea what I'll actually be working on yet but I'm looking forward to finding out.

it often feels like i'm getting nowhere with this phd, but i took a snapshot of where i currently am for a progress review and ya know. i've actually done a fair bit.

where do you teach?

I'm currently teaching at the Australian National University, but I also pretty regularly teach at the Australian Defence Force Academy which is a campus of the University of New South Wales.

Hmm two guys in Sabaton shirts in my intro to modern war course. Not sure if this is going to be a good thing or not

I went into my wife's work this week to give a talk to the year 9s about WW1 and as thanks they gave me some hardtack that they'd made.

I'm definitely going to eat it, I just need to find a recipe from the war that uses it.

In a tiny town called Tarcutta, almost exactly halfway between Melbourne and Sydney there's an American M1918 howitzer. Originally a French design, the Schneider, it was adopted by the Americans in WW1 and sold to Australia for use in North Africa in 1941.

Thought I'd make the most of it while I was there.

There's also a 25 pounder field gun, but there's a ton of those still around and there's only three of these Australian Schneiders.
