Product Rendering : Designing Digital Futures

“How might interaction design relate to sustainability in 15 years time?”

With the task of looking 15 years into the future of sustainability on the planet, the decision was made to focus on the ever-present health crisis especially with the lockdown being in effect at the time.

Wanting to create a fully fledged product, I used Autodesk CAD to fully render and design the packaging, sticker and informational booklet that would be packed with the final concept. Through this I learned how much effort and time goes into creating a truly cohesive unboxing experience and how this small interaction means a lot on its own. How the box slowly opens, how it feels and how it fits all contributes to the overall aesthetic and value of the product.

Design Challenge : What Time Is It?

“Learn 1-12 in a new language (e.g. Mandarin, Arabic, Braille, Sign) and design a watch/ clock inspired by what you learned.”

Focusing on CAD rendering I decided to utilise braille as a basis for my watch design due to its limitations: it must be functional for its blind users and use a simple, clean design aesthetic. Once again this was created within a 1-2 hours time period which started in Autodesk CAD.

The basic functionality is the watch has 12 rising pistons on its face, 6 for each number which makes up 0-9 and is separated with a raised barrier in-between. This can then be read by the user by feeling the device. The cut semi-circle at the side is there to assist in turning the face of the watch (shown in image 1). This rotated face showcases the minutes past the hour, an option which is represented by the placement of the cut-out (towards the user, or away from the user).
