Rly aims to achieve 20 pc share in automobile transportation by 2020-21 Goyal meets industry leaders

New Delhi, Oct 10 (PTI) With an aim to achieve a share of 20 per cent by the end of 2021-22 and 30 per cent by 2023-24 in transportation of automobiles, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday met auto industry leaders to encourage them to use the rail network.     Representatives of Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Tata Motors, Hyundai Motors, Ford Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Honda India, and Maruti Suzuki Ltd, the Automobile Freight Train Operators (AFTOs), Automotive Tyre Manufacturers' Association (ATMA), participated in the meeting, a statement from the Railway Ministry said.     The total loading of automobiles through the railways was only 429 rakes in 2013-14, which has increased to 1,595 rakes in 2019-20. https://www.theweek.in/wire-updates/business/2020/10/10/del44-rail-auto.html

Govt Asks Auto Industry To Bring Down Costs For Boosting Sales

India's tax policy on automobiles has been quite consistent for the past three decades and the industry should strive for greater efficiency levels to bring down costs rather than expect tax cuts, government sources said on Thursday.

"These companies should cut down cost of manufacturing by reducing royalty payments to their parent companies abroad instead of asking the government to reduce Goods and Services Tax (GST), said a senior official of the Finance Ministry.

Government policies have allowed foreign investments and incentivised domestic automobile manufacturing by providing reasonable protection from imports. The industry on its part has delivered.
