You’ve probably been using automated editing for a while and didn’t even realize it. As an example: Apple Photos, Google Photos, and Facebook, among others have been doing this for a while now with their pre-made videos in their respective photos apps.

Open up Google Photos on your iPhone or Android device, go to Assistant, and you might see some pre-made movies made for you, where Google takes events from a day and puts them together into  a small movie, which works pretty well, even if the movies are not what I would consider “professional,” they are nice for those who have zero editing skills.  I do consider what Google or Apple does “good enough” for most people. 

On the professional side of things, I think some sort of automation needs to not only be good enough; but, also great. This is an exciting time for video editing, it seems with YouTube that more people than ever are jumping into genre of art, or creation. 

Would I use a form of automated editing for my work? Yes. If the technology is superior, or equal to my skill level, then why wouldn’t I take advantage of it and save time in the process. No, I don’t think a computer will ever be able to do my job, not in my lifetime anyway.
