do yall ever think corporations push to make consumers put in work to consuming adds to the general decreasing energy levels people have for their lives out side their work hours?
just thinking about how theyre used to be a job called baggers in stores whos sole job was to help the customer by putting their bought items in bags sometimes even carrying them to their cars if its a lot of items or the person is elderly/pregnant
but that got phased out and that role got pushed onto customers because? ive no idea
then theres self check out lanes now where customers not only have to bag their own stuff but also now actually have to be their own cashiers as longs theyre using a credit card or a machine that can give change
there also used to be a job called pumpers in gas stations whos sole job was to stand by gas station pumps and well theyd pump the gas for you and that got phased out somehow and that job got pushed onto the customer so now you have to get out the car and press buttons and card in card out
im sure theres more like im psure there used to be bathroom attendants whos sole job was to keep the facility clean sometimes theyd offer warm wet towels and other products to customers and if the sink got wet or the toilet gets a bit dirty theyre there to clean that got phased out with hand dryers and paper towel dispensers and again that job got pushed to customers oh sure there is someone who supposedly comes in every hour or so to make sure the bathrooms stocked and cleaned but really often whatever store youre at its a little unkempt and downright dirty if your unlucky and not because the staff is lazy more often its cause staff is too busy serving customers to keep the bathroom clean so in a lot of places it only gets cleaned if a customer complains or if it reached a level that it has to take priority over helping with customers
Im sure theres more maybe we can add shoe-shining it used to be shoeshiners were at malls and stores to clean peoples shoes and now instead weve got the stores trying to sell the shoe polish so we can clean it ourselves but like who has the time and energy to clean their shoes? oh sure one time you think youll do it so you buy the polish but you never do, do you?
How about the idea of having to return recyclable goods to a recycling center instead of to the company you bought it from?
i remember when pop was largely sold in glass bottles and you had the responsibility to return to the store you got it from and youd get some change in return oftentimes youd even use that change to purchase another bottle and thered be trucks dedicated to ferrying these back and forth from the factory for the glassed bottles to be cleaned to be reused but now its us the consumers who have to recycle who have to dedicate time and energy to return these recyclable materials to a dedicated recycling center and for doing that wed get some change but as things get more expensive and people are more exhausted than ever how many times do you go to the recycling center in a year?
im exhausted and im sure theres more im tired and dont wanna put more work into just trying to go through my days but companies keep pushing work onto us both as employees and consumers
