As we pass the winter solstice, we aren’t the only creatures appreciating the return of longer days. Autotrophs are organisms that produce their own food. Photoautotrophs, which include all plants, green algae, and some bacteria, create their food using sunlight through a process called photosynthesis. (Chemoautotrophs, another type of autotroph, use inorganic chemical processes to create energy, and include some bacteria and organisms around deep sea vents). Without autotrophs, no other life would exist. Heterotrophs, like us, depend on other organisms to live.
