AGE APPROPRIATE?
Yes, my Beauties I am very grey, it began around 28....so, ah, you can imagine how much is revealed when it pops outs every 4 weeks or so.....that’s why “only my hairdresser knows.” Autumn, the lady who makes my hair beautiful is an essential part of my wardrobe!
While having the the age washed out of my hair today. I pondered this Question,
What is age appropriate?
This question actually started yesterday from a brilliant Facebook article “What Not To Wear After 50: The Final Say.” It was clever as some items were: “The Weight Of The World,” “Shame and Regret” and “Stiff Upper Lip” because it eventually causes those nasty lip lines! My favorite was “Resting Bitch Face.” The author said that we can wear that one all we want......but personally I think that one should be used sparingly and only when you really mean it.
But that got me thinking about the clothes, makeup and hair...and what beliefs we impose because of the number on our driver license.... Is there really an age limit to rocking over the knee boots?
“No” was my ultimate answer, but I did have to be true to myself and think about the judgements I have made in the past about myself and others....
Take Madonna for instance, when she boldly wore that oomph dress with her booty hanging out to prove that an over 50 year old rump can be as nice as the younger ones. My first reaction was distain and embarrassment that she would go there. Today my thinking is that, although I don’t think any age body should have their rump shaker hanging out, I appreciated her message and she is, after all, Madonna!
Conversely, I was at a lobby bar one weekend and there was this 80plus, snow white haired, hard body Beautie rocking a body hugging red dress and stilettos and she was a head turner. Not because she looked at all wrong for her choice, but because she totally knew she looked amazing and she ROCKED IT. I was so in love with her that I followed her to the bathroom and completely gushed my admiration. She told me to never lose my desire to love what I saw in the mirror and to not be afraid to shine.......I play this memory over and over when I doubt myself.
I am lucky too, that I come from women that refuse to be limited by the age box. My mom and aunts, in their 70′s, are always sharp dressed...each with their own unique style that is the the envy of many a girl way younger. My aunt owns a clothing store and dresses young hipsters all day, so why wouldn’t she rock a hipster vibe too?!
So really what I came to is not the style, color, length or store, but the attitude! It’s all about how your rock the outfit!
It’s all about how YOU ROCK YOU!
So as I sit here at the salon taking care of my long hair that I decided to go back after many years of wearing it at a shorter more “age appropriate” length, I know that the answer is NO there is not an age limit to wearing knee high boots.....and heck you can't afford the really nice ones until you are a little older anyway. It’s really about how you feel and honor yourself and then sky’s the limit.
Can’t wait to share more with you soon about what to wear!
And even though yes I am over 50, I think this and the Facebook article applies to any age my younger Beauties, because someday you will be over 50 and want to take advantage of all that you have acquired both in your closet and your beautiful mind.
Rock on!
