Autumn leaves scatter like forgotten promises—crisp, golden, and fleeting.

They pirouette through the wind’s hush, whispering stories of warmth turned memory, of endings dressed in amber. Each one falls with quiet grace, a soft punctuation to summer’s long sentence.

She becomes the season itself.

The lake holds her like a secret,

and the leaves whisper stories only autumn knows.

What about when darkness falls? When bad news abounds, when an unexpected bout of depression arrives and seems to be the only difference between sunny skies and the desolation that enfolds me on every side. In these darkest moments I force myself to count my blessings on my fingers. Literally. I tap my index finger with my thumb and search for one thing to name. "I am thankful for Mom," I say as I drive into town. I tap my middle finger with my thumb, and say, "I am thankful for Henry and Kiki, my Newfoundland dogs." I tap my ring finger, "I am thankful for knitting." Sometimes, three is all I can manage. But more often than not, I will reach five or seven. The exercise doesn't end my depression, but it stops one aspect of depression that can be particularly devastating. 1. my roommate just said, “ugh, you type so freaking fast!!!” so that’s a thing

2. i just learned this year, at age eighteen, how to do a cartwheel.

5. i’m studying psychology with the intent of being a therapist, specifically for eating disorders.

8. i played marcy park in the 25th annual putnam county spelling bee my junior year in high school, and that was probably my favorite role i’ve ever had to play.

9. i met my boyfriend because we had to make out on stage in a play we were both acting in together, so i guess that worked out.
