They met in Honnleath.
Cullen knew him by a different name then, an unwanted pronoun and another time. Neither of them had any way of knowing then, but they knew each other.
Messy hair as red as the leaves just beginning to fall. Painted lips that twisted into a frown upon noticing a chip in his perfectly polished nails. Beautiful brown eyes Cullen lost his words deep within too many times to count. Joy and warmth that radiated from him like he carried the sun in his pocket, never failing to bring out a giddiness in Cullen he had scarcely allowed himself since. Theirs was a friendship given freely, easily, and generous in affection. There was always something left unsaid, however. An underlying wish Cullen kept locked away and buried, but keeping the key nearby, just in case.
Yes, Cullen knew him well.
Many of their days were spent by the lake. A quiet place, far from the nosy townsfolk and Cullen's rambunctious siblings. They sat with their legs swung over the dock, the tips of their toes brushing the cold water, skipping stones under a Fereldan gray sky. Laughing and alive in their freedom, no one to be and no one to please. Familiar and treasured moments, safe together, days so endless and over so soon.
Then Cullen came of age and the templars called. He was to leave for training within the week, just long enough to pack his bags and say goodbye. They knew it was coming, this was the plan from the start, but still he had to force a farewell through the lump in his throat. With no time left for anything else, they shared a heartfelt hug before he boarded the carriage. His friend wiped at his eyes when he thought Cullen couldn't see.
He recalled one day at the lake, the breeze freezing after a long swim, a rare glimpse of sunlight shining in his friend's hair, in his eyes, in his smile, and desperately wanting to kiss him. It wasn't until he arrived at Kinloch Hold that he wished he had taken that chance.
But that was years ago. Before the Blight, before Kirkwall, so long ago it felt like another life. In a way, it was. The last thing he expected was for his old friend to show up at Haven, one of many hired from nearby villages to ensure a steady source of supplies for the stronghold's inhabitants. Although, having left his templar duties behind to lead the humble beginnings of an army against a demon-spitting hole in the sky, declared a heretic by the very organization he pledged his life to serve, he supposed it was time to expect the unexpected.
His chosen name was Autumn. Fitting.
Memories of lying in the clovers, hearts full and secrets shared. A sudden downpour sending them running to the nearest building, soaked to the bone and slipping in the mud. A change of clothes and sitting by the fire, close and not close enough, steaming drinks in their hands to keep from holding each other’s.
He wanted to know him again.
Ok but. Cullen being nervous to walk into the war room for the first time since embracing his gender non-conforming style because “Josephine and Leliana always look so pretty...” and Autumn encouraging him, “Vhenan, YOU look so pretty!”
