AUX FOLIES

In 1790, when Belleville was still a village outside the limits of Paris, Gilles Dénoyez opened Vielleuse, the first in a series of establishments at Rue de Belleville and famed graffiti lane, Rue Dénoyez. Following the building of a permanent structure for the Folies in the 1860s the site has been a hotbed of political activism and an entertainment venue, before eventually being transformed into the neighborhood bistro of today, Aux Folies. No longer the concert attraction of the early 20th century, Aux Folies still honors its history and the many stars that graced its stage, perhaps most notably French singer, song writer, and actress Edith Piaf. Now showing the effects of time this Ernesto Novo tribute continues to serve as a tribute to the bistro's famed past. Originally from Nice, France, Novo's Vietnamese roots have opened him to a variety of influences including pop colors, African art, hip hop, jazz, and reggae.
