A Dive Into Red Eyes and Penitence Ryoshu--AKA, Save Your Shards For This Walpurgisnacht, She Highkey Kicks Ass

I have been a diehard Ryoshu fan since day one. Her base ID is really solid, and I've yet to craft a team that does not have her on it in some form or another. I'd been using Butler Ryoshu at the time of the Red Eyes and Penitence (REAP from now on) drop, and let me tell you the difference between the two on an unstructured team was night and day.

I'll keep the details down below because this is gonna go a little long, but the tl:dr is that she hits like a goddamn truck and funds her own buffs well enough that she plays nice with just about anyone. I've been joking with my brother that the only real nugget of widsom I have when people ask for fight advice is "Shard REAPshu" because really and truly, she has been a key player in every fight I've done since I've had her barring the very end of Canto VII. This is my case for her, and I hope you enjoy :D

Straight out the gate, I want to expand on my REAPshu applications thusfar. She *is* a bleed unit, and I've found that she *does* play nicer with other bleed units, but I never had problems with her clashing, ramping, or damage while she was on my unstructured team. Also bear in mind that you DEFINITELY want her s3 and I haven't played with her without it, so mileage may vary on ut2 and below.

HITS LIKE A GODDAMN TRUCK

At a very quick glance, REAPshu rocks a 4-12 s1, a 4-16 s2, and a 5-17 s3--solid numbers that are then boosted via coin and clash power as she ramps. She starts receiving stack bonuses on her skills at 7+ each for Red Eyes and Penitence, which is one solid s3, or two-to-three s1's and 2's, so she ramps fairly quickly! I'm not a terribly technical player and I don't want to get my math wrong, so I won't pretend like I know exactly how hard she hits all boosted up, but what I do know is that by turn two or three, her s2 becomes a reliable everyman clasher, and by the time she's max SP, she is an active bomb threat.

That bomb threat takes the form of her s3, Skullbuster, which is practically free EGO on its own, but gains an additional Serious form when she hits 15+ stacks on both her self-buffs.

On its own, Skullbuster gains coin power when REAPshu is faster than her target, AND gains additional coin *and* clash power when she's at max SP. Both of these conditions are fairly easy to meet a few turns into a combat, which typically puts a normal Skullbuster into the Dominating class for prediction status regardless of what you throw it against. In addition to winning clashes, her third coin has an on hit effect that does HP and SP heal to herself AND her lowest ally (HP gets Penitence/2% of max [0-7%], SP gets Penitence-10 [0-4]). While the numbers aren't huge, they can help mitigate chip damage--especially that of status conditions or unbreakable coins, which helps keep REAPshu topped up and keeps her allies breathing.

When a Serious Skullbuster procs, REAPshu automatically gains a +3 to both coin and base power (+4 if both stacks were at their cap of 20), typically smashing through her clash and laying into her opponent HARD. Her final coin deals +120 to +160% damage, inflicts 3 Bind and 2 Atk Power Down next turn, AND does a modified heal (herself and lowest ally, HP gets Penitence% [15-20%], and SP gets Penitence-5 [10-15]. Add one more ally per 2 highest Resonance, for a max of three total allies benefitting). Numbers are a LOT better on the heal here, and used in the same turn as a Rodion Hex Nail or Pursuance, can very well bring an ally back from the brink of death. Not to mention, a Serious Skullbuster typically deals around 300 damage on its own. It's like I said: active bomb threat.

FUNDS HER OWN BUFFS WELL

As I mentioned in the previous section, REAPshu funds her own stacks in about two-to-three turns. Her s1 funds +3 Penitence (+4 if she heads) and +2 Red Eyes, her s2 funds +4 P and +3 RE, and her standard Skullbuster funds +7 to each even if you make it through the clash with only one coin left (+2 more P if she hits heads). And while these stacks clearly give her an edge with their coin and clash power conditionals, they also stand pretty well as buffs on their own!

Red Eyes is the most straightforward: her bleed coins gain +1-3 bleed, depending on its stage. This is especially helpful if she stands as her own bleed funder for conditionals and chip damage. But Penitence is where things get interesting.

Its first effect grants 2-6 SP per hit with Penitence-gaining coins, depending on its stage, and its second grants Penitence% of max HP as shield [0-20%]. Its this shield that makes her chip heal on a standard Skullbuster so powerful: IF an enemy managed to break through her shield, they're dealing nominal damage, that is then typically fully recovered by the use of a single s3. It effectively gives her the same recovery as a bloodfiend, so long as she's winning her clashes, which she usually is!

She's a freight train of damage, a viable shield for vulnurable allies, and a med kit all in one. And to top it all off, granted you have easy access to wrath resources, she's got a pretty killer base EGO to bust out, too. I didn't even touch on her passives, or her Only Ashes Remain status effect she gains on Serious Skullbuster, but honestly I think my case is made well enough by her self recovery and 300 damage dealing skill alone--that was all it took for her to win my heart!

If you've got her, try her out, if you want to, send me a friend req, I keep her on my company always since no other unit does it like she does. In all the months that I've been using her, I've only ever noticed her lose a Skullbuster clash once, and more often than not, she's the last man standing when my team goes down.
