When he first started dating me, we went through this crazy “I just met you and I’m really feeling you” phase, and there were songs of hers that linked me back to that primal feeling. I still have Aretha Franklin’s record, “Until You Come Back to Me” (That’s What I’m Gonna Do) and I keep playing it, and that’s because this heartfelt ballad speaks to the earth-shattering changes a lover goes through after a long-standing relationship ends. It’s about the phone that no longer rings. I used to play that song over and over, and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. David would call me when I was playing that song; the phone would ring, and it would be him. He’d say, “Isn’t that the song you were playing the last time I called?” The lyrics spoke to me and still do. -Ava Cherry.
