excuse me while I SCREAM I'm so fucking happy!!!!!
Ava: What if they don't let us adopt a kid? We don't exactly look like great parents on paper.
Sara: Babe, we can't worry about that. If it's meant to be, our kid will find a way to us.
[Doorbell rings]
Sara: That was faster than expected. [Opens door]
Astra: I still don't know how to cook and I can't get a job and I'm lonely so I'm just going to live here now.
Sara:
Ava:
Sara: Congratulations, it's a girl?
Just putting this here...
Family Bonds
The thing about being a former time agent married to a former member of the league of assassins, you never stop being a couple of total badasses. Which in turn led to them having one hellfire of kid. A kid that was becoming just as skilled as them even if she had trouble focusing at tasks presented to her. When she did focus she excelled.
Today Laurel Olivia Lance had excelled at getting suspended from school... yet again.
Walking out the principal's office she found her 6 year old waiting for her. Her feet swinging as she sat on the bench. She was humming and fiddling with the strings of her hoodie, her signature smile on her face that only grew when her eyes fell on her mom.
"Hey mommy, guess I should be sorry for getting in trouble again."
Ava crossed her arms, "Are you sorry, Laurel?"
"Nope. Jenny was being a jerk. She said I was a dumb weirdo and stole my chocolate milk at lunch. So I tied her shoelaces together while we were in silent reading time. I was so sneaky she didn't even notice!"
"Laurel, what did we talk about? What are you supposed to do when someone is mean to you?"
"Tell a teacher first but Momma said it's good to fight against bad guys! And Jenny is so mean. Not just to me. She pushed down Josh during recess and she broke Heywood's space shuttle she brought to show me. Heywood made that herself and, and she was so happy about making it and Jenny made her cry! So she deserved it."
Ava let out a disapproving sigh, "She didn't deserve to have her nose broken Laurel."
"I didn't think she'd fall on her face," Laurel admitted as she let out a huff, "I just thought she'd learn to be nicer if something mean happened to her too."
"Laurel, there are rules that you are supposed to follow. Instead you took matters into your own hands without thinking about the consequences. Now someone is hurt because of your actions and that is not something you shouldn't take lightly."
"But she hurt my friends. You and Momma taught me how to fight and you always told me that sometimes you have to protect the things you love. So why is it wrong?"
Ava took her daughter's hands. Those little hands that she knew would grow. Hands she never wanted to let go. Hands that whenever were reached out, she would never hesitate to hold. But they pulled away from her this time. Anger scrunching up Laurel's face her usual happy face replaced by a glaring red one. She even turned away from her, her arms crossing the same way her's had been just moments ago. Ava felt her resolve slipping away but she stood her ground.
"Let's go, young lady. We'll discuss this with your mother later. Grab your stuff."
"Fine." Laurel grumbled, slinging her backpack over her shoulder and stomping ahead of Ava as they walked out of the school. Obviously she needed a Co-captain to handle this situation. Good thing, Sara Lance was her's.
Laurel Sharpe-Lance
((One of my Arrowverse next-gen kids.))
Full name is Laurel Sharpe-Lance.
Superhero name is Nightingale.
She’s the younger twin, but she doesn’t like to talk about it, specifically because RQ does like to talk about it, too much.
The only one Sara was with when she went into labor was Mick.
Though he f r e a k e d out at first, he actually handled it okay and got Sara to a hospital.
He will deny he cried when he was made baby Laurel’s godfather.
Where RQ is a momma’s boy, Laurel is... not as much.
She loves her moms but has a special connection with John. He first figured out she had magic and taught her to use it without hurting anyone.
Magic lessons made her super close with John and Gary and not as much with Ava and Sara.
Still, she never says no to cuddles where Ava and Sara grab both twins after a stressful mission and hold them until all 4 fall asleep.
Besides her moms and Constangreen, Laurel’s favorite growing up is Mick.
She loves Auntie Charlie, Auntie Zari, Uncle Behrad, Uncle Ray, etc., but none of them have the raw nonchalance about her magic that Mick does.
He’s the only one who will just shoot a little stream of flames at her (the heat gun on low power) so she can practice shields or just randomly ask her if she can summon him a snack.
By the time she’s 10, Laurel is tired of everyone treating her like a little kid, like magic is something that should only be used as a last resort, because at this point, magic is like breathing to her.
Mick doesn’t do that. For him, magic is just another part of her and he loves his goddaughter even if she summons Bloody Mary in rear view mirrors just to watch her get hit by a car.
For the record, Sara also finds that hilarious, but moving on.
Laurel is really close with Calliope because Calliope gets it. They have girl talk a lot and do joint spells that neither of them are strong enough to do alone.
Those two, being two magical kids on one timeship, are a special kind of chaos once Laurel discovers her magic at age 6.
When they end up in the past, Sara and Ava don’t really understand why they’re having trouble getting through to Laurel.
It’s because when she was little, Laurel knew she was different but they didn’t believe her until John confirmed it.
To be fair neither of them had experience with kids yet. Their only real experience, in fact, was babysitting baby Arthur once when Nora and Ray couldn’t get anyone else to watch him.
Eventually they talk it through and they promise not to make the same mistake when they raise her in this timeline.
In the future, Laurel has a bit of a *ahem* thing, with Amaya’s great-grandson, Zaire Jiwe. (Kuasa’s (mainly because I know nothing about Mari) son.)
By which I mean they run into each other on missions way too often and flirt A LOT but refuse to have a goddamn normal conversation.
Kuasa was never close with the rest of the heroes so Zaire grew up separately from the others and Laurel doesn’t know who he is beyond ‘the Fox.’
RQ is past being overprotective brother and is now just frustrated with them like oh my god can you talk to each other without flirting but never acting on your feelings ONE TIME?!
Instead, Zaire and Laurel just flirt even more obnoxiously to annoy him while internally freaking out like holy shit does he/she actually like me back???
Sara doesn’t tell Laurel she knows who he is cause she’s an overprotective mom.
And Ava is oblivious and doesn’t even know that Laurel likes him.
Maaaaybe Laurel will find out who he is and maybe she won’t. ;)
Whenever they are around together Laurel Lance and Laurel Sharpe-Lance are called Big Laurel and Little Laurel.
It’s a little awkward as they both know Laurel is named after the aunt who died years before she was born.
But they make it work.
Laurel Sharpe-Lance, everybody.
I do believe Sara is mom and Ava is mama... I don't know why I just feel it
Family Bonds, part 2
For a few years now, Sara Lance had been the owner and sensei of a dojo. Stepping back from being a full time Legend was the right call but she needed to find a new outlet and the dojo was something that just came to be. It kept her on her toes and was satisfying to teach others how to properly protect themselves. Plus having Ava help and giving Laurel lessons was a fun family bonding experience for them.
Sara had just finished her afternoon sessions when she got the text from Ava.
The school called.
Uh oh what did my beautiful daughter do to cause trouble this time?
Not sure yet. They just told me to come in and apparently another student was injured. On my way now.
I'll cancel the rest of my sessions and meet you there.
No, don't. I got this. Finish your day and we'll figure this out together when you get home. Focus on work babe. I love you.
Are you sure
???
It's no big deal
I'm sure. Don't worry, my love 😘
OK see you at home
I love you too babe
So much ❤
Of course when she did arrive home, Ava had nervously ambushed her at the door. Her arms coming around her in a hug. Sara couldn't hold back a laugh which made her wife frown.
"Sara, this is in no way a laughing matter. She was suspended again but this time she actually hurt someone with one of her pranks. I thought you know, surely nothing could be worst than the time she had replaced the goldfish in her science class with those piranha she smuggled in and I still have no idea how she managed to get her hands on piranhas in the first place!"
"Pretty sure she managed to scoop one of our old time couriers. Isn't that what we agreed happened? I mean we spent days trying to uncover that one."
"That investigation was inconclusive due to lack of evidence or our daughter's confession but Sara we need to focus on this incident right now. She broke a kid's nose and we are lucky her parents decided to let the school handle it. This is her third suspension this year alone. Our six year old is literally on the verge of expulsion."
Sara let out a huff of frustration, "Yeah well turns out we can wrangle totems and demons, fight against vikings and pirates and hell even aliens but when it comes to making sure our kid stays in school, well... let's face it, toughest mission of our lives is our little girl."
"On that, we both definitely agree."
They fell silent for a moment. The two of them holding each other, hands slow and soft, caressing each other in comfort of their embrace. The worry on both of their faces vanishing as their foreheads touched. Reassurance pouring into each other without the need of words. In that moment together they knew that together they would be okay. Together they could make it through this.
"We should make a game plan." Sara muttered, her lips moving to Ava's ear.
"I'm way ahead of you babe."
"Oh?"
"I made a list!"
Sara couldn't hold back her chuckle, "A list? Before we know we will have a whole instruction manual on our hands, 'The Co-Captains' Guide on Raising Laurel Olivia Lance'. Is that we are doing now?"
"Well, now that you mention it" Ava bit her lower lip, "It may actually be more than just a list."
"Babe, have you been holding out on me?"
"You um want to look it over? It's um quite extensive." Ava pulled Sara toward the living room, "I mean if we go up there right away without a solid plan of action we might not be able to control the situation."
"Hmm, seems like the right call. Fortification of a united front could take some time." The two settled together on the couch, "All work, no play?"
Ava smiled, leaning in close, "Well, perhaps a little play." Ava leaned in and her lips found her wife's. The kiss was longer than she intended. It was a feeling that never felt old. It was a feeling of peace. It was a feeling of home neither one of them would ever let go. Except only to breathe and of course to solve the problem at hand.
"Time to get the work then?" Sara asked as they broke apart for air.
Ava kept Sara close, "Yes but..."
"But?"
"Just one more kiss."
For record my friends, it was more than just one more kiss.
Family Bonds Part 3
Lockdown.
What a terrible word. As far as Laurel was concerned the only good thing about locks was when you were figuring out how to open them. To see what they were hiding. Not that her mom had actually even locked the door. Which may have been worst actually. No challenge. Nothing to figure out. The only thing that was keeping her in her room was that word.
"It's a terrible word! Terrible! Terrible!"
She stood herself in a handstand glaring at the door. She couldn't sit still just waiting on her parents to open that door. She had thrown her handball around the room for awhile. Kicked and punched her punching bag for who knows how long. She tried to work on her homework assignments but that just made things more frustrating when she ended reading the same sentence over and over. So now handstands. Handstands and waiting.
The blood rush to her head got to much though so she let herself unceremoniously flop on the floor. She laid there for awhile. Staring at the ceiling. Her eyes looking up at the ceiling lights but her mind on things that maybe some six years would never think about.
Who invented the first knot? The idea of holding things tight together. Or keeping them from coming apart. Or shoelaces being tied up using a song about a bunny. Shoelaces that could make you fall on your face if someone tied them together just right and, and well broke your nose. Her hands where the ones that tied the knot. Her hands.
Then her hands were dumping her backpack out on the floor. Books, papers, drawings from Axl, a couple of moonpies and finally, finally pieces that had been flipping through her mind all day. Pieces that had made her angry. It was these pieces that made her so mad. These pieces that had made her want to tie the knot in the first place. Jenny had made these pieces. But Laurel, she was the one who broke Jenny's nose.
"Laurel?"
In moments like this Laurel would usually smile. It was her signature after all but right now she just felt too much. Tears in her eyes she turned around to face her moms.
"I didn't mean to break her nose. I promise I didn't mean to."
She stumbled into Ava's arms and Ava quickly scooped her up and held her close. The plan that Sara and her just staged downstairs now falling apart in that moment. They had been planning on a firm, no nonsense speech but now, now they were going to have to reevaluate the situation completely.
Shit. Shit. Shit. That is what played through Sara's mind first but what she actually ended up saying was, "We know, kiddo we know."
She looked at Ava as if what to say, what now?
And Ava mouth back, I don't know!
So they sat together on the bed holding their daughter as she cried. Ava and Sara both rubbing her back and telling her everything was okay. As her tears slowed down Laurel wiped furiously at her eyes only for Ava to quickly grab kleenex out of her pockets to gently clean her daughter's face.
"That's better isn't it? Did you let it all out my Sunshine?"
"Y-yeah." Laurel sniffled, "I think so, Mommy."
"That's good, kiddo." Sara kissed her forehead, "Now come on, sit down with us and we will talk this out okay."
"Okay."
For awhile they just sat together. Laurel squeezed tight between her parents. After all together they would always find their peace. Peace at being home.
"So, your mom tells me that Jenny was being a bully and you decided to pull one of your signature pranks huh?"
Laurel let out a heavy sigh and rolled her eyes, "Obviously. It's that why I'm in this lockdown?"
This attitude. At age six.
Sara knew that it was definitely her side of the gene pool it came from but, damn this kid was going to be an even worst rebel of teenager than she ever was.
No doubt about it.
"Okay miss attitude monster mode activated i see. Want to tell me how you've been feeling. I know you're having some big feelings but do you think you can tell mommy and me what it is you are feeling?"
Ava rubbed Laurel's back soothingly, "Hey, no pressure honey, take your time. We're here to listen okay. Help us understand how this ended up happening okay."
Her little right foot suddenly began tapping in the air anxiously, her nose scrunching up and her beautiful grey eyes shifting as she tried to put together her thoughts.
"Jenny is um, well she just doesn't like me. Heywood says she is my nemesis and maybe we are I don't know. She likes to pick on me a lot. She usually just bothers me at lunch time. I don't care when she takes my chocolate milk though. I don't even like chocolate milk. I just get it so she doesn't take my friends' milk. I like juice."
"Hmm, well that is a good tactic of defense." Ava was impressed, "You use a decoy to give Jenny what she wants without taking any real losses. That is brilliant, love."
"Super sneaky and totally smart, kiddo." Sara agreed.
Laurel grinned but her smile quickly faded. Her foot tapping faster and her hands clutched onto her hoodie. Seeing this her moms each took one of her hands and held them tight. Her foot slowing down back to an softer rhythm. Then she took a deep breath before starting again.
"Jenny makes me sad mostly. She likes to call me dumb cause she gets good grades and I don't. Class is just boring sometimes but, but I'm not dumb. I am smart."
Ava and Sara looked at each other. Their protective mother instincts kicking into overdrive. They had been aware of Laurel struggling in school and been working on a solution for awhile now. With these new details everything seemed to click better into place. Everything was telling them to act immediately but their kid needed them there now. The solution could wait.
"Mommy, Momma..." Laurel slid to the floor picking up pieces of a broken model rocket that lay scattered before them, "I got mad. I got so mad when Jenny made Heywood cry. She broke her rocket. She put it together by herself and she wanted to show me so bad and Jenny just, she came over and smashed it! I wanted to punch her right then and I knew i could. But I sat with Heywood instead and then I picked up all the pieces. Except I didn't stop being mad. Then when we went to silent reading I, I saw Jenny and I... I wanted her to feel bad for making Heywood feel bad. So I did. But I didn't mean to hurt her like that. I really didn't."
They joined her on the floor. Pulling her into a tight hug. Of course Laurel didn't sit still long in their arms. Trying to wiggle out of their grasp and complaining about being squished.
"Part of your punishment is squishes and tickles!" Sara declared as Laurel failed to escape and soon Sara had her squealing in laughter.
"Mommy, mommy save me from Momma! Make her stop, ahhhhahaha!"
"Hmm, I don't know, Sunshine. Maybe I should join her side."
"Nooooooo! Please save me, Mommy!"
"How can I say no to that cute face! Release our child and surrender Captain Lance."
"Make me, Captain Pantsuit."
That's how they ended up wrestling on the floor instead of going through a stern lecture. Of course they did find time to go over some rules. Let her know it was okay to feel upset. To feel angry that someone hurt you and the people you care about. That sometimes you made mistakes. Sometimes you had to fight but to never let it be the first choice if you could avoid it. To talk through feelings instead of lashing out.
But the most important thing they let her know was,
"We will always be on your side, kiddo. No matter what."
"You promise?"
"Of course we promise."
"Mommy and I we got you. Always."
That is how they spent the rest of the day. Together. Listening to their kid talk. Working together to put back together a broken space shuttle. Just being a family.
The next day?
They called Jenny Monroe's parents.
More Facts of Laurel Olivia Lance
• She was named after her Aunt Laurel and Oliver Queen. She is very aware of their history as vigilantes. She has always has been inspired by both of them.
• Laurel has traveled back in time to see her Aunt as the Black Canary. It kind of stings Sara a little to know that her daughter's favorite Canary is her Aunt Laurel and not her.
• Laurel knows the fact that her surviving Aunt Laurel is a doppelganger but absolutely loves her. For awhile she even considered one day joining the Canaries after spending time with them for a summer. Her love for time traveling won out over that idea however.
• Her favorite superhero is Supergirl. She grew up wearing a lot of Supergirl merchandise. Kara was also a special guest to a lot her birthday parties. [All I'm saying if they kill her off in this last season ima be pissed.]
• Quentin Lance was saved after Crisis so you can guarantee that he spoils his granddaughter rotten, not that her parents really need help in that department. He sees the same, if not heightened, rebellious spirit of her mother yet still reassures her that she is a force of good in the universe.
• Oh yes she also adores her Uncle Tommy. He was the one who bought most of her exotic pets. He also bought her a motorcycle 🏍 for her sixteenth birthday. Ava was beyond disapproving of this gift FYI.
• Despite having a strong support system Laurel has a lot of self doubt. This stems from her academic and social struggles as a kid. She has a need to succeed in all her ambitions. She doesn't do well with failure. Deep down she has a the fear that she is broken. She feels like she will never live up to her self expectations to do good and to be great.
• Jenny Monroe kept her mean streak against Laurel all the way into High School. She never forgave her after she broke her nose. Laurel never injured her physically again but her ego? She bruised that many times by pulling pranks on Jenny at every opportunity.
• Jenny has twin sister and while they are identical in features they are exact opposite in personality. In fact Amelia and Laurel actually became friends until well, let's just say Amy joined the lunch table for one of her friends and things happened when they hit their teenage years...
• Laurel got the talk twice. The first a soft one with her parents at 8 after Nate Heywood accidently slipped out a story about Sara wooing people throughout their adventures. She thought it was gross to say the least. The second one she got from Ava when she was struggling with her sexuality at 15. Ava helped her figure things out about herself and eased her out of a breakdown.
• Laurel's coping mechanisms consists of work outs, masterminding pranks, time heists, making homemade snickerdoodles and spending time with Indie.
• Laurel is just as as short as Sara and she hates it. What is more annoying is the fact that Indie out grew her by three inches and she affectionately teases her about it.
• Laurel always has a stash of moonpies available because she knows they are Indie's favorite snack.
• She stole a Green Lantern ring once when she was 11 but couldn't get it to work. Sara Diggle's ring btw. She was not happy about having to track her down to get it back. Laurel made her thumb wrestle for it.
• Laurel has never ever beat Sara in a sparring match. One of her goals in life is to win against her one day.
• Laurel listens to every one of Ava's serial killers podcasts. She also goes out of her way to discuss them with her just to make her mom smile.
• Family movie night is a fixture in the Ava Sharpe, Sara Lance household. No one messes with sanctity of Family Movie night. No one. But it is really hard for Laurel to sit through a whole movie so her moms usually have her squished tight between them so she doesn't move around as much.
