It dawned on me that after Yoshitaka Amano, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is probably my favorite character designer. It seems almost eerie that he happens to have worked on 3 of my favorite anime and yet I like them for seemingly more reasons than just their character designs. But there is a very nice thread running through his work, and I enjoy his moody colors and fluid lines as much as the way his characters are written. Plus his handling of the NGE manga is fantastic. The connection he creates between these three series reminds me of the one Chiaki J. Konaka creates between Serial Experiments Lain and Digimon Season 3: Digitamers (and those characters have a weird similarity to these though they are different designers). Weather its fantasy, mecha or surrealistic suburban characters, his style works equally well for each of the diverse contexts of these respective franchises, while still displaying a unique through-line.
So like, two years ago, I told Ava that I'd draw her Merida. She probably doesn't remember, but because I have a weird selective memory, I do.
It's far from perfect (see: her facial expression -- she looks as confused about it as I am), but my computer art skills are a work in progress (that just started yesterday afternoon - aaaa).
Update: Of all the things wrong with it, I'm most frustrated I forgot her freckles. Dammit.
