“That should be the last of the boxes.” Y/N said as she swiped her hands together to rid them of imaginary dirt. “I really can’t thank you enough for how much you’ve been helping me through things this past week, Sam. You’re a true friend.”
She offered a genuine smile for what seemed like the first time since her breakup with America’s golden boy. It was beginning to feel like forever since she had been in a relationship though that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. She was starting to thoroughly enjoy the alone time she harnessed to rediscover herself. Being in a relationship meant you had to compromise a lot to keep everything fair and comfortable. She could recall a time when Steve had just gotten home after a mission. She reminded him of the plans she had previously made for the next day; Y/N wanted to go fishing with him at her parents private lake house for a weekend to unwind and reconnect with nature. Steve wholeheartedly agreed at the time they made the plans but after the mission he changed his mind, explaining that he would rather stay home and rest up. Y/N understood and agreed. After all it was only this one time, right? It ended up being more than that ‘one time’. Y/N would set days aside in advance for Steve’s plans so that they could be together but Steve rarely, if ever, did that for her. She always tried to reason that he did it (more-so didn’t do it) because of his job. Working as an Avenger was a spontaneous job that required short notice to be called out. But it wasn’t really that deep and she knew it.
“No worries, short stack.” Sam smiled and ruffled her hair after putting the last box in his car. “It’s what friends are for.” He shut the door to his car and found his arms crossing over his chest in a non-threatening way as he smirked down at her. “So when are you goin’ out on another date? It’s been a week. Give or take. Shouldn’t you be getting used to the idea of another relationship?”
Y/N thought about it for a good moment before sighing softly and running a hand through her hair and laughing exasperatedly. “I don’t even have a couch, why would I go back out for another relationship?”
“Simple: A new couch. A sugar daddy! Some fun, maybe? You deserve a little frivolous happiness.” Sam gently joked. “What are you doin’ later? Maybe we could-“
“Can’t, sorry.” She smiled non-apologetically. She knew Sam wouldn’t ask her on a date because they just didn’t flow that way, but she couldn’t make plans that night no matter the intention. “I’ve got a class to go to. Pre-Paid. I wouldn’t wanna lose my money, now would I?”
Sam chuckled and shrugged as his shoulders relaxed and his arms fell to his sides.
“Alright, Y/N. Class? I didn’t realize you took your academics so seriously.”
“Actually it’s not an academic class. It’s a recreational one! I’m taking pottery.” She spoke somewhat nervously as if his opinion of her really mattered.
“Pottery?” He let out a light chuckle of disbelief. “Good one. So what class is it really? Advanced Astro-Physics? Brushin’ up on your algebra?” His voice held a high pitched teasing tone.
Y/N sighed slightly and found herself shaking her head yet again at his usual big-brother antics.
“No, I really am taking a pottery class.” Sam went respectively quiet when her tone became more serious as she kept speaking. “When I was with Steve I was always so busy waiting by the phone or at my own job that I never really learned what I enjoyed. I mean, other than watching movies. But even after a while that can get a little boring.” He smiled thoughtfully (and a little proudly) and nodded once to let her know to continue. “So I’m taking a few classes of random hobbies to see what I like. So far pottery is a good candidate!”
Sams face beamed with pride as he looked down at her. His arms slowly extended outward from his body in a ripe ‘Hug Me!’ position and Y/N squealed while she met him halfway and found herself being lifted into the air for a split second.
Sam gave great hugs. He ticked off all the boxes which accumulated to form the perfect hug. He smelled amazing (like good cologne and a little like sweat but it was the good kind that smelled more of a musk), his arms and chest were firm but welcoming, he saved his hugs for special occasions and emotions (making them worth more), and he was all around just the best kind of guy to receive one from.
“I’m glad, kid. Hey! If you like it a lot maybe I could join you!” Sam released her from the hug and winked. “Ghost style!” Y/Ns unamused and somewhat confused face stared back at him. “You know, Ghost! The movie Ghost from 1990 starring Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze?” Y/N shook her head and laughed at the exasperated look he gave her. “Whatever, man. I’m outta here.” He threw her a peace sign as he got in his car and headed back to the base.
—————————
Steve sat up in his bed, rubbing his eyes in an attempt to clear his foggy mind. Looking to the side of the bed he half expected his old nightstand to look back at him with Y/Ns quirky alarm clock sitting atop of it. He was sadly wrong when he saw the ugly bright red numbers on the uniform clock given to him by the Avengers compound. He looked on the opposite side beside him to confirm he was really alone and was almost heartbroken all over again to see he truly was.
I fucked up.
Steve sighed and threw his legs over the side of the bed and stood up. His body erupted in goosebumps because of the chill the tiles sent through his feet. The only thing on his mind was Y/N. Maybe Y/N and brushing his teeth. Mainly Y/N. The only way he gets rid of these thoughts is putting his body under more stress than his mind. He’s spent the last week with Bucky in the training room in an effort to get rid of these plaguing ideas. After wiping his mouth of the excess water and toothpaste froth, he looked at his reflection. He appeared to be in the beginning stages of a beard due to his lack of energy for shaving. His blue eyes seemed dull and his hair unkept but he associated those with his continued grogginess.
Not heartache.
He took a deep breath before walking out of the bathroom with nothing new but fresh breath. He shuffled his feet to his dresser to retrieve an exercise outfit for his continued abuse towards his own fists and the Avengers community punching bags. He shook his head as the sound of his scuffing feet against the flooring reached his ears.
If only my mother could hear this now.
Steve remembered all the times when his mother would scold him for dragging his feet. She would say;
“Steven Grant Rogers, that is completely ungentlemanly. Walk like a gentleman and stop scuffing my floors.”
Despite the circumstance, Steve wished he could hear his mother scold him one last time. He missed her voice. She wasn’t the only woman he was currently missing though. Y/N was still on his mind and he felt himself thinking about her more and more as he made his way to the gym. He knew he was supposed to meet Bucky there and even though Bucky was Steve’s confidant, they had a rule not to speak about the break-up. It kept things in their relationship calm and Buckys mind from getting too muddled.
Steve let a wide yawn stretch through his jaw and out his lips as he approached Bucky who was sipping water while seated on a bench and clearly waiting for him.
“Look who finally decided to show up.” Buckys chestnut hair was pulled back in a bun but it had a few strands hanging out; you could tell he still didn’t know how to properly put it up. He smiled softly but genuinely as he got up to meet Steve halfway. “How’d you sleep?”
Bucky always asked that every morning to anyone he came across that was willing to engage in small talk. Everyone knew about his own nightmares and in turn, he didn’t want anyone else to suffer his nightly terrors or anything similar.
“I slept fine.” Steve spoke as his hands busied themselves trying to prepare for the attack by getting wrapped in athletic tape. “The beds a little rough around the edges but I can’t really expect Y/N to give me our old bed.” Steve was half joking.
Bucky felt himself sigh and saw Steve tense up at the sound; sending Steve into an apologetic frenzy of “I forgot about the ‘no breakup talk’ rule!”
The brunette just smiled in response and shook his head.
“Whatever, I’m gonna get started on the treadmill. You can start here and I’ll spot you from my station.”
Steve nodded as he bent down to start his pre-workout stretches. He didn’t look up when Sam walked in until said bird man dropped a box full of Steve’s knickknacks on the gym floor, prompting Bucky and Steve’s attention.
“Glad to see you’re both busy. Here’s your stuff, Stevie.” Sam waved mockingly at Steve as his blonde counterpart made his way toward the box. “Get any rest?”
“Here and there.”
“So that’s a no. Just do the thing we suggested.” Sam was persisting.
“I said no, alright? I don’t want to.”
“Steve, you’re starting to sound like a-“ Bucky was trying to get a word in but per usual he was cut off.
“I said no! Leave it alone, dammit!” Steve sighed as he picked the box up off the floor and stormed back towards his room. Leaving his friends and work out forgotten in the gym.
Both remaining men looked at one another in disbelief and pity.
“I don’t understand why he won’t just call her.” Sam was stirring up the pot.
“You know why, Sam.” Bucky was bringing it back down to a simmer.
For now things seemed tense and Sam was hellbent on relieving the situation.
