Allison sat quietly on a log that overlooked a small but lively creek, the only sounds surrounding her was the restless waters and an occasional birdsong. She took a deep breath, inhaling the evening mist that formed after an afternoon storm. It was humid, but not uncomfortable; she was at her favorite spot after all.
It was far enough into the forest that the common hiker rarely ventured to the location, and it offered the perfect escape for her. Alone, at peace, and hand-and-hand with nature. She sighed, scattering the cloud of gnats around her face, and she laid down on the log to admire the mix of slender and grotesque tress about her. If it were at all possible, this would be her permanent home. Lazily, her eyes closed, and the inviting idea engulfed her imagination and consciousness.
The moment was brief.
She heard a rumble, or explosion perhaps, which startled her upright and quickly to her feet. Part of her wanted to believe it had just been an unfortunate, old tree that had finally made amends with the earth, but then she heard the same booming again.
“What…what could possibly be happening?” She thought out loud, scanning the forest around her. First, she saw nothing, but then something metallic, unnatural, appeared to be swiftly advancing in her direction. Surprised and uncertain of what or who was approaching, she ducked behind the log, and waited, still as a deer in headlights.
