MUSIC MONDAY PLAYLIST: Avery’s Picks
“Grease” by Frankie Valli (Grease, 1978)
Music Video Recommendation: “I’ll Be Around” by The Growlers
Brooks Nielsen, the lead singer, might be one of the most effortlessly cool artists on the scene. This track is from their 2016 release City Club, which combines elements of blues rock with tinges of bluegrass and, in turn, taking their signature sound to a whole new level. Working with director Warren Fu on this video gave us a dark take on a ‘70s throwback.
“Stay With Us” by Seoul (I Become a Shade, 2015)
Album Recommendation: The North Borders by Bonobo (2013)
Bonobo creates incredible music that is simple, yet simultaneously instrumentally complex. Anyone who can say they have seen his live set would agree it is one of the most visually beautiful experiences; plus if you get the chance, catch him at his show in D.C. later in August.
“Bags” by Clairo (Bags, 2019)
Film Recommendation: Frances Ha directed by Noah Baumbach and written by Greta Gerwig
Before Gerwig became an indie icon with Lady Bird in 2017, she started her career starring in independent and mumblecore flicks. Frances Ha is the awkward 20-something in all of us, especially if you’re facing the struggle of city life.
“Amour Plastique” by Videoclub (Amour Plastique, 2018)
Film Recommendation: J'ai Tué Ma Mère written and directed by Xavier Dolan
French-Canadian filmmaker Xavier Dolan started making his movies at 20 years old and, despite his age, has created multidimensional characters and storylines based on his own experiences as an LGBTQ+ community member and his tumultuous familial relationships.
“When I Get Home” by Post Animal (The Garden Series, 2016)
Song Recommendation: “Wanted You” by Twin Peaks (Down in Heaven, 2016)
Joe Keery of Stranger Things is one of the guitarists of Post Animal, who have long collaborated with Twin Peaks. Give ‘em a listen if you’re stuck in “sad boy hours.”
“Running” by Helado Negro (This Is How You Smile, 2019)
Artist Recommendation: Illustrator & Designer -- Perry Shall
Perry Shall has probably designed merchandise, posters, and album covers for some of your all-time favorites. Familiar with the Black Keys’ “Let’s Rock” cover? You can thank Mr. Shall for that one.
“stay” by datfootdive (Mother, 2017)
Song Recommendation: “Orchids” by Monster Rally (Return to Paradise, 2014)
It’s like the “lo-fi hip-hop beats to study/relax to” mix, but fine tuned for all us art school kids out there.
“Getting It On” by SALES (EP, 2014)
Song Recommendation: “City Boys and Model Girls” by Propellers (2014)
It’s a bop, yo.
“Kingston” by Faye Webster (Atlanta Millionaires Club, 2019)
Video Recommendation: boygenius NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
In case you might have missed this, please do yourself a favor and watch Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker do a stripped-down acoustic set of a few tracks from their collaborative project. It might have been a short-lived group, but that makes it all the more sweet. What’s better than one indie-folk queen? Three of them combining forces.
“Sometimes I Wonder” by Dream, Ivory (Self-Titled, 2017)
Music Video Recommendation: “Perfect Places” by Lorde
This seems totally unrelated, but my mind associates this song with how the entirety of Melodrama makes me feel. Watching Lorde cut to and from different spaces (or places) -- each time still alone -- makes you feel some type of way.
