Biography:
There isn't much to be said about Avery's childhood. She was an unremarkable child. She did fairly well in school, at least when the subjects suited her, and struggled when they did not. As typical of an autistic child, she was not diagnosed nor suspected to be autistic, her struggles simply set aside as failures on her part.
When she hit eighteen, she was kicked out onto the street by her parents, forced to fend for herself at the earliest legal moment. Having worked some jobs during high school, she managed to score herself a crappy apartment, out of which she applied to become a police officer. She never had much interest in handing out tickets, but she enjoyed puzzles, and thought that if she could make money doing good, she might as well.
Several years into her career, it was clear that the police had no interest in doing good any more than they had interest in maintaining impartiality. It frustrated her when other detectives would ignore obvious corruption or worse, take bribes from some of the seedier businessmen in the city, but eventually she personally was asked to overlook the obvious evidence in her case because it would incriminate one of the upper crust in the murder of several sex workers over the past month. She flatly refused, and as a result she was discharged from service, charges invented on the spot in order to toss her out of the force and remove her involvement in the case as soon as possible.
After that, she struck out on her own, having established herself and gained experienced working the mean streets of the city. Almost immediately, she settled on the idea of working as a PI. An investigator for those who the police would ignore, or at worst, blame for their circumstances. And so, the offices of Avery Lee, Private Investigator opened for business.
She's been doing well for herself- at the very least, she can keep food on the table and cigarettes in her pocket, if only barely. But she's doing good by the city and the people who live there, and that's all she's ever wanted... besides a satisfying puzzle.
