Meet Avgi (Dawn) - a teenager who lived 9000 years ago in what is now Greece.

We celebrate our churches and our cathedrals, and we pretend to understand how vast time is when we gaze up at the castles perched high over our cities, but the cave where Avgi was laid to rest - that was a sacred place people had revered and honoured and sacrificed to for one hundred thousand years. That’s fifty times longer than the past most of us can imagine. We know two children, a toddler and his or her older brother, stepped over the ashes of a sacred fire four thousand mothers ago; we can see the place where their feet left a mark, and so could Avgi - did she have any idea of the distance that separated her from those children? Did she know anything about the - other - skeletons buried next to her friends and relatives? Those Neanderthals who’d worshipped and sang songs in that same cave, that history-that-could-have-been which vanished about thirty thousand springs before Avgi was even born? We don’t know. We don’t know what this young woman thought about the world, and the language she spoke to her loved ones. We don’t even know how she died. It’s likely her family lived through something momentous - that she was among the first to give herself up to the new gods of the bountiful harvests and the terrible, unforgiving storms. This is the face of this choice we made - to walk out of the woods and stop running and hunting the beast and stop being the beast, also, and to submit instead - to the hazard of the near future, to careful planning, and to our own ingenuity. Avgi may have worked in the fields with her family, or she may have been the very last of that savage and beautiful thing we used to be - she could have looked up at the Moon like the deer and the wild hare do, waiting and wishing and dreading the morning. There are so many things we simply don’t know, and likely we never will, but this is some seriously heartbreaking magic - look at this girl - we are the first to see her face since someone who loved her (a parent? a husband?) kissed her forehead for the very last time and told her goodbye - Goodbye, my dove, my only, oh - goodybe - and may it be that we see each other again some day.

The historic newspaper of the Greek left, Avgi,will hold its daily edition after 70 years. The newspaper has apparently fallen victim to financial problems as other daily newspapers in the recent past due to changes in the landscape of printed media and readers habits.

Its director posted on social media on Wednesday that he resigns as he did not manage to increase the number of subscribers.

Like other historic newspapers ToVima and Ethnos, also Avgi will keep its printed Sunday edition and its website.

Face of teenage girl from 9,000 years ago reconstructed

A team of researchers with the University of Athens and a Swedish archaeologist has reconstructed the face of a teenage girl from the Mesolithic period whose remains were found in a Greek cave. They have publicized their efforts by showcasing their work at the Acropolis Museum.

The young girl's remains were found in 1993 in Theopetra Cave in the Thessaly region of Greece. They were dated back to approximately 9,000 years ago, which, the researchers note, puts her at a time when humans there were transitioning from hunter-gatherers to farmers—the dawning of civilization. It was for that reason the team named her Dawn, which translates to Greek as Avgi. The researchers believe she was between the ages of 15 to 18 years old (based on teeth and bone samples) when she died of an as-yet an undetermined cause. They determined she suffered from anemia, scurvy and joint ailments. Read more.
