Organized by the French newspaper Le Petit Parisien, the 1911 Paris to Madrid air race was one of the great events of early aviation: a three-stage event from the airfield at Issy-les Molineaux to Angoulême; Angoulême to San Sebastián, over the Pyrenées; and the final leg to Madrid. In the image, a Blériot-style aircraft soars above the Royal Palace of Madrid on the left, and a panorama of Paris with the novel addition of the Eiffel Tower. Jules Védrines was the only aviator to finish the race, in a time of 37 1/2 hours. This is the rare larger format.
