Review: Avirus - Space Invaders
Review: Space Invaders by Avirus by Erised You know what the best thing about these reviews being my personal opinion is? I have absolutely no obligation, nor desire, to pander to our readers tastes. If I genuinely like something, regardless how much I think the majority of you may hate it, I'll still stand by my call. That very much sums up this song for the most part. I have a strong suspicion that most of you would hate this, but I actually thought it was really great. I know. Fuck me, right? So why did I enjoy it? Well, first of all, the opening quote is awesome, so theres that. Second of all, the main focus of the song is a sick, almost-Pantera like groove that I absolutely loved. I would hazard a guess that the guitarist was brought up on a steady diet of Pantera/Anthrax/System of A Down etc. which comes through loud and clear. Even the guitar tone would not be out of place in this company. The vocals remind me strongly of Anthrax; think Joey Belladonna belting out that high range, gritty, half sung-half screamed sort of tone. Definitely suits the style of music and further confirms that these guys are into their early 90's groove. There's also some vocal phrasing that is very reminiscent of Serj Tankian's unique flow, which is a nice little homage. There is definitely some down sides though. The riff overload can be a bit much at times during this song, as some of the riffs don't quite hit the mark that the main riff does. The solo is another thing that doesn't quite cut it for me, it's a bit sketchy and atonal. Kind of like a slayer solo, and anyone who knows me knows exactly what I think of King/Hanneman's wretched lead work. Lastly, I think the large mainly instrumental section is a bit self-indulgent and probably doesn't add alot to the song, but that's personal taste. An all around solid effort though, and something that was actually pretty refreshing to review. It's nice to get a bit of nostalgia every now and then.
