It's almost time for me to wrestle the beast, a big window air conditioner that goes in the window of my dining room and cools the main floo
This useful article from the Chicago Tribune talks about using hand trucks and dollies (trolleys) safely to move appliances (such as air conditioners, fridges, washing machines, clothes dryer machines and freezers) safely in your house or for moving into a new house.
Hand trucks can also be used for moving furniture (like tables, bed mattresses, chairs or lounge sofas) safely without falling or injuring yourself. The Chicago Tribune’s safety tips on moving appliances and furniture are:
Each house should have a hand truck to move appliances safely.
Appliances may need two people to move them safely.
Weight belts don’t help if you don’t know to use them properly and they don’t always prevent you from getting injured while lifting or moving appliances.
If there isn’t any place to grip the appliance safely, strap it to a hand truck or dolly.
To lift the appliance safely, use the muscles from your legs (not muscles from your back).
Hold the appliance as close to your body is possible. Grip it from the bottom, under its centre of gravity.
Lift the appliance in one smooth motion with your arms.
Clear your path of anything blocking your feet (move toys, rubbish, clothes, wires, cables, chairs or tables, or shoes out of your way). This is to help you avoid falling over and avoid injuring yourself.
Also,I’d like to add:
You can buy hand trucks at your local hardware or gardening store like Bunnings in Australia. Or you can order a hand truck online from Amazon, Gum Tree or EBay.
All the best and stay safe while lifting or moving your appliances and furniture. 💕
