Levi's fingers page through Beau's handwritten poetry like it holds answers. (Like it is a holy book; The Bible or the Vinaya; he worries sometimes that his fingers are tainting it.) Sometimes Levi can read something and know that it is about him, other times he finds himself hoping and wishing. How warm to be the object of thought in Beau's mind when he writes these things. It's the warmest Levi has ever been.
He falls asleep in the armchair like that, a notebook against his stomach, a few papers with crumpled, torn edges resting on his knees.
—————————————
When Beau gets frustrated, Levi worries. He wants Beau to be okay and even the slightest indication of something preventing that is enough to make Levi feel off center.
Patience is a virtue, he knows that much, so although he's nineteen and wants to be impatient, and wants to fix conflict in a quick snap of his fingers, he knows he can't. He sits and lets Beau try, try, try, and though sometimes he tries to ignore Beau's frustrated exhales or the sound of a pen dropping against the hardwood floor or the desk, he finds that he's hyperaware without being able to help it.
Unlike Beau, he knows when enough is enough. Beau is so determined that he could waste hours on trying to keep a pen in his hands if Levi let him. But Levi doesn't, because eventually those frustrated exhales turn into curse words, and the dropping becomes more frequent, and he's able to recognize determination working in a negative direction.
So he does different things to get Beau's attention.
One time he goes into the kitchen and starts pulling out things for dinner, and asks him where this is, and where that is, and Beau's up after the second question, adding things from cabinets because holy Hell, Beau can cook, and Levi knows he likes it. So they cook together, even if it's a lot of Beau just teaching Levi (Levi moved in underweight and hardly knowing how to make a box of Pasta Roni).
Another time he has to take the pen and slide it away, because Beau looks more angry about it than usual. Levi slides his fingertips down the nape of his neck and then presses his palms evenly over his shoulders.
Levi writes the grocery lists for a while, but his heart hammers when Beau picks up a pen and adds wheat bread and sugar to that list. And only once since coming home has Levi had to help Beau slide the ends of his sleeves over his fingers and up his wrists.
Beau's often blind to the progress, but Levi sees progress in every direction, and he tries to remind Beau that in every way he can, through his words and fingertips and mouth, or just smiling at him the right way. Any way that he can.
—————————————
Levi cries because he has dreams that Beau doesn't wake up. Dreams that he's still just carrying that stupid velvet box in his hoodie pocket, living with sweat at his temples, looking at Beau through glass with that constant beeping in the hollows of his ears.
He's embarrassed, but Beau holds both of his hands and kisses his eyelids. He apologizes, and says something about not leaving, never leaving, and about "I'm here," and forces Levi closer. (Because when Levi's anxiety gets that bad, he's more likely to just stare at his chest, afraid to touch because if he does, Beau might vanish into thin air and leave behind just a plume of smoke.)
—————————————
Soccer's cool, though.
Until all his joints hurt and he thinks he might lose it the next time Coach asks him to run an extra lap, and he sprains an ankle. He doesn't limp, he has too much dignity, but it's irritating.
Coach says the boys' "homework" is an ice bath and Levi rolls his eyes, and a few of the guys groan while the rest seem like that's no big deal. Wesley nudges Levi and says dude, just try it, and apparently it works.
Levi's highly doubtful, and Beau looks even more than doubtful.
He's in just his briefs, and he brings his feet down from the ledge of the tub to the water slowly. It's uncomfortable, more of a burning senstation than just cold, and he makes a face. "Levi, this is stupid," Beau says. "You can just do some stretches, or heat therapy instead."
Levi makes it five minutes with his lower half submerged, but only two once the water's up to his chin.
Beau helps pull him out because holy shit, he can't really move, and his body is shaking from head to toe. He dries Levi with a towel and helps him pull on a pair of sweat pants while Levi curses, and Beau would laugh if he wasn't actually concerned, because Levi hardly ever get pissed off, let alone curse like that.
For a while they stand in the bathroom, Beau holding Levi closer to his chest but after a few minutes Beau suggests they go outside, because it's sunny today. He tries to keep an arm around Levi but once they sit on the deck he wraps both arms around him and Levi exhales sharply and moves closer with the least hesitance Beau has ever seen in him. (Mostly because he's shuddering an desperate.)
He whines and grits his teeth, and Beau pushes his fingers through Levi's still wet hair, and presses his palm warm against the back of his neck. He sighs and frowns, while Levi mutters something like, "You were right," very bitter, and then a little while later a thank you. Beau's hands never stopped moving, sliding over the goosebump's on Levi's arms, adjusting the blanket, wishing only to stop his boy from shaking so.
Levi falls asleep with his head in the crook of Beau's shoulder, his breaths coming out shallow but, thank Heaven, warm over Beau's neck. Beau remembers the ice bath Wiki (he'd looked up several sources when Levi brought up the idea) and what was that about "elephant tranquilizer," again?
