you might not want to get into this topic because in a way, what good is gained by us talking about it, and it's full of landmines, but if you heard about the n-word being shouted at the baftas-------I don't think that man should have been there. I understand that it's a disability and he can't control it and he doesn't mean it, and as someone who's dealt with intrusive thoughts I feel terrible thinking about anyone living with that condition. But if *I* had that condition, and I knew that I might shout the worst racial slur in the world at black people, then I would make major efforts to avoid not ruining black people's night at this once-in-a-lifetime event celebrating their work on this movie. I might ask to watch the ceremony in another room and then join the festivities after, for example, where it's easier for everyone involved to do what they need to do (like leave the room) if my tics start acting up. I would not expect people to be okay with having me shout the n-word at them on TV, while they're on stage in front of hundreds of people, just because they know I don't mean it.

Not to mention that the Baftas and the BBC are disgusting for censoring "free palestine" but not censoring that. And disgusting for just issuing some vague warning about possible "outbursts" and not warning people that they might hear racist slurs. And for not checking with Delroy Lindo and Michael B. Jordan after it happened. And for referring to the n-word as simply "strong language."

Having a disability means that reasonable accommodations need to be made for that person, and they obviously can't be expected to just stay at home all the time. It does not, imo, mean that that person's rights to experience everything without limits at all times must be prioritized over the rights of black people not to have the n-word shouted at them at the Baftas. And it is pretty gross to see all these people, mostly white people, rushing to act like absolutely nothing else matters except this guy's right to attend the ceremony, no matter how many times he shouts anti-black or antisemitic or misogynist insults at people onstage in what should be one of the best moments of their lives.

I did hear about it, anon. It's a really sad situation, and the fact that the discourse out of it has been what its been has been really enormously disheartening.

Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo’s dignity and safety should have been a given, and the fact that it wasn’t is shameful conduct on the part of the BAFTAs. John Davidson's words, while out of his control, caused real harm which can't be mitigated, and the BAFTAs not only allowing that harm but amplifying it by keeping it in the broadcast was a gross mishandling of the situation, and their lack of proper acknowledgement and apology to Michael, Delroy and the other artists affected adds further insult to injury.

That said, calling for the further isolation of people with profound and/or multiple disabilities is not - cannot, in my opinion - be the answer. You're talking about some of the most marginalised people within our communities who experience often violent segregation on a systemic scale, from special schools to out-of-home care facilities, and their right to participate in creative, professional and social life is still often actively denied them. Their lack of visibility in public life directly corresponds to widespread ignorance about disability that has been flagrantly on display in the fallout of what's happened, which results in the further vilification of disability and contributes to these conversations that are fundamentally exclusionary at best to outright discriminatory at worst.

John was rightfully invited because a film about his life and his activism was being honoured. Gosh, the ablebodied actor who played him won Best Lead Actor for doing so, and the suggestion that his disability can be celebrated when its performed but should be barred from entry when it's lived veers us very quickly too into the creative exploitation of marginalised peoples.

As someone who works a bit in this space, particularly around intersectional safety (in fact, as timing would have it, I was actually at the Fair Play: Learning and Practice for Equity in Australia’s Creative Industries report launch last week which was partially about these sorts of conversations), to me what seems to have happened is a complete breakdown of safeguarding processes that should've been in place to ensure the dignity and safety of all of the BAFTAs guests. I work with Access and Inclusion Coordinators in both theatre and event spaces, and there should've been one of them working with John and the BAFTAs staff in the lead-up to the ceremony to ensure that they could best support his needs, prepare their other guests, and have strategies and accommodations in place to not just reduce risk, whether that be seating him near an exit so he could recuse himself quickly as needed, or to have more regular breaks to diffuse stimuli and stressors, but to also manage the hurt and damage if it happened after the fact, which they clearly didn't do or have when it did happen.

I appreciate your frustration. It's a painful, complicated, humiliating situation and none of this mitigates the real harm that's been caused. Michael, Delroy and the whole team of Sinners deserve both a private and public apology from the BAFTAs, and I think a private apology at least from John*, and the BAFTAs clearly needs to review it's safeguarding practices, because at the end of the day, true access and inclusion isn't just about inviting everyone, it's about ensuring both safety and meaningful, good faith participation for all guests is achieved to the highest possible standard, and they obviously completely failed on all fronts.

(* this is a complicated area in and of itself too as apologies are inherently about accountability, and how can a person be accountable for something they have no control over? I've heard many people with profound and/or multiple disabilities speak about having to live in a state of apology over their existence in a way that soaks them in shame too, so I don't know. I'm not qualified to speak on it, but I do think that at least an acknowledgement of harm and hurt caused, particularly in an instance like this, is really important.)

Summary: 

*Growing Up*

-At age 8 she and a few black kids felt that there wasn't enough black history education in the school she was attending, and so they decided to put on a play for the school and performed a play featuring historical figures in black history. 

Said she grew up going to a predom. white private school (where her dad also worked) for a few years, and then switched to a predom. black public school.  Said that sometimes growing up biracial in a predom. white space was challenging at times. Felt more comfortable and accepted in her predom. black public school where she saw more people who looked like her.  

Saw first-hand at a very young age how the wealth gap really affects the educational experiences that kids have.  She saw how her mom had to fight for even basic supplies and needs for her students in lower-income schools.  

Grew up extremely shy growing up (even got held back in Kindergarten becuase she wouldn't ask questions).  Said her parents forced her to try new things in order to get over her shyness and get out of her shell. Did dance class, different sports, and the arts.  Loved the arts and wanted to spend so much time at the theater and LOVED watching plays.   

She did community theater in her area.

Said she started doing catalog modeling at a young age and that helped her to get out of her shell as well.  

*The Disney Experience*

Started screen acting when she was age 13.  Would watch Disney Channel when she was young and thought it was so much fun and wanted to do it.  She said she didn't fall in love with acting through movies, but more so through watching actors (esp. stage actors).  

When she first went in for her Disney audition, she just started watching all of these Disney shows and tried to be what they wanted to see.  When she got her first show on Disney she actually didn't tell too many people at her arts/theater school because she felt that people wouldn't believe her.  She only told a couple of people.  

Said she had to start doing a homeschooling program when she started working in LA on the Disney show.  Her dad quit his job as a teacher and ended up driving her back and forth from Oakland to LA in order to make her auditions.  Eventually they knew she would have to move to LA once she landed her job.  She and her dad moved into an apartment and her mom stayed in Oakland working.... It was tough being away from her mom because she was going through "girl changes" and missed her mom...being with dad was not the same when going through changes lol.  But then eventually her mom moved out to LA too.  

Her mom always told her that if the acting life was ever too much or too much stress that she could always stop, and they could just go back home.  Z feels like she's always had a great support system. She's had a lot of ups and downs and is just figuring things out.  Said it's been a little tough being a young person in this industry w/out any real roadmap.

When it came to KC Undercover she realized that she could have more power and felt that it was important to showcase a black family and for kids to see themselves reflected on the Disney Channel.  Also wanted her character to be well-rounded and into many different hobbies so that it would have representation for kids who like a variety of hobbies/interests.

She had been working at Disney since she was 13....and said it felt weird not having it (the show)  as a safety net there anymore after the show ended.  Said she's a "workaholic" and that her work really fulfills her.

Said she tries to be selective and take her time when choosing projects.  Said she didn't want to get too far TOO quick, and didn't mind doing small roles. Didn't want to jump  too fast.  Still feels that way.  Wants to keep doing things that inspire her and keep her creative.  She just wants to be better at her craft. 

*Euphoria*

Says she's so confused at what Sam saw in her for the role of Rue as Euphoria lol.  Said she never really found out.  She said that he would just watch her interviews and said that he just knew immediately that she was Rue.  Says that whatever it was that he saw, she's glad he saw it.  

She says there's only so much that she can fully understand about addiction, and that it's different for everyone, and so she had to rely heavily on Sam and ask him questions about it.  She said she feels very connected to RUe and a lot of her fears and anxieties.  She may not have Rue's background, but she might feel the same emotions as her character.  And then there are times when she doesn't know exactly what Rue's going through.  Feels that it's about having empathy. Feels often people are very judgemental about those with addictions, but feels/hopes that people who connect to Rue can feel that they can have a better understanding of a family member or a friend who goes through addictions so that they can better support them, or help them feel "seen".

*Emmy Win*

Says her Emmy win was just CRAZY.  STILL can't wrap her head around it.  Feels incredibly grateful and was SHOCKED by it.  Felt like the oddball in the mix of such great female actresses.  Was just grateful to be there at the Emmys and would have been cool either way, whether she won or not. Said it was a very pleasant surprise. 

*Euphoria/Pandemic/M&M*

Said Euphoria got shut down (due to the pandemic) a day before they were supposed to start filming S2. Called Sam and spoke to him about Euphoria and the future of the show.  Felt weird not being able to work.  Didn't leave her house for over a month lol.  Then they spoke about shooting a movie in her house, then it grew into M&M.  

Says M&M was written for her and says she can have an argumentative tough side...the film was written with pieces of themselves into the toxic characters. The motivation was to get the crew back to work and get some of the crew paid and safely, and to be experimental.  That was the main motivation of M&M. It was really just an experimental project basically. Said the limitations of filming were actually kind of freeing in a way.  Said it was a very special experience. Felt like an actor's summer camp lol.

The Knife Scene: Said it was a fun scene to shoot. She wanted a challenge and something she could dig her teeth into.  Said it was a tough scene to do though... Re-wrote the scene many different ways.  There were so many versions of it and it wasn't really clicking. 

*Emotionally Wasn’t Doing Well*

Sam told her to just LET GO and sream at John David and scream at him like whoever you need to scream at lol.  And then that didn't even work... Then she had a conversation with Sam... Explained how the past year was really tough for her and how she wasn't feeling herself, and "she wasn't doing really well", and felt that the M&M movie helped her.  She was able to have more fun when she could finally tap into a moment that was tough for her to admit in front of her cast and crew family (ie. Sam, JDW, etc)  that something was wrong.  Said JDW has become close to her. It was tough admitting that there was something she was going through.

Said it was also cathartic to just scream as her character...said she's not a screamer lol. 

*Things She Wants To Work On/The Future* 

Said she has a hard time being super happy in the moment...said she's super critical of herself, wants to make people proud and do a good job.... still learning what it looks like.  It's hard for her to in the moment to really enjoy things as it happens, and feels like it's something she needs to get better at.  Many times she won't even take in the good in the moment because she's so stressed about doing a good job, so she recognizes that she needs to do better with just being in the moment.  

Says she LOVES her job, is so grateful for it.  Trying to learn to love everything that comes with it (even criticisms, thoughts and ideas).  So she's been really feeling immense gratitude for everything, and hopes to continue to make things  she wants to see. Would like to become a filmmaker one day... Wants to continue to be creative and make things that people enjoy and move people.
