Speartails!
The Speartail is the main species of creatures in the second subterranean layer (a brief description of the universe/planet is here).
They resemble a hybrid of a wyvern, a lizard, and a bird of prey. Their entire body is covered in spines, even on their tongues (resembling a spruce branch) which they use for close combat (snagging their prey like frogs) and for grinding food.
They live and hunt in packs, moving on both four and two legs. They can also move freely in the first layer, but in smaller numbers.
they are very aggressive, Surprisingly they also perceive drones as prey; apparently, they took a liking to the cores of the poor expendables sent to the exoplanet to mine minerals.
They usually don't attack first, but wait until their prey is vulnerable or wounded (they can smell blood from tens of meters away). They will surround you like vultures, occasionally attempting to attack.
They will first try to disarm you by ripping off your arms or knocking off your weapon with their tails (they will rip off the tails of dismantlers even though nanite acid has no effect on them), then they will pierce the drones vulnerable parts (visors(eyes?) and torsos) with their tongues.
One downside is that the speartail's tongue structure makes it very difficult to escape (it can even drag the body along). If the pack senses a threat, they will call upon a speartail elder; he is much larger and more dangerous than normal specimens.
