Today’s words 11/3/17

Today was a holiday and I didn’t go anywhere, so I crashed through Monster volumes 15 + 16 and Karneval volumes 11 +12. 

Monster

ドタキャン - last-minute cancellation (HOW USEFUL IS THIS WORD??)  from 土壇場でキャンセル (dotanba de kyanseru), to cancel at the last moment (dotanba = last moment)

一喜一憂　; いっきいちゆう  ; “now rejoicing, now worrying; swinging from joy to sorrow; glad and sad by turns; alternating hope and fear; unable to put one's mind at ease​“  (AND HOW USEFUL IS THIS WORD???) It’s also interesting to see when ‘ichi’ gets abbreviated and when it doesn’t: before K it gets shortened to いっ, but before Y it stays as いち.

時期早尚・時期尚早 ；じきそうしょう・じきしょうそう  ; premature This word is mostly interesting because apparently the last two characters frequently get switched by mistake! It makes sense, ‘shousou’ is much hard to say aloud than ‘soushou’. 

浮かばれる；うかばれる；to rest in peace (Happy Halloween!)  It’s also kinda funny because ‘ukabu’ means ‘to float’, so although ‘to be able to float’ would be ‘ukaberu’, it’s pretty similar.  The dictionary also says it’s usually used negatively, as in ‘cannot rest in peace’.

掛け替えのない；かけがえのない; irreplaceable  Don’t you ever get to thinking, you’re kakegaenonai This word was also in the title of a song in a musical by an NPO group. And don’t forget to notice it’s kakegaE and not I.

物騒；ぶっそう；dangerous, unsettled I’ve seen this word before and it’s a good one to know. I never noticed it was the kanji for ‘mono’ and ‘sawagu’, through. “Noisy things.” Explains Japan’s preference for keeping the volume down in public spaces...

まくし立てる；まくしたてる；to talk on and on, to keep on talking without pause

時宜；じぎ；right time, appropriate time, season’s greetings Seems very Japanese, as does a similar word, （お)辞儀；(お)じぎ; (bowing and) greeting

試行錯誤；しこうさくご；trial and error

獲得；かくとく；acquisition, possession I just never remember this one...

Karneval

ドン引き；どんびき；1. drawing away from someone because of their speech or actions; having the mood ruined​ 2. zooming out or backing the camera away to get a wider image (film, TV)​

頃合い；ころあい；suitable time, good time  Kinda like ‘jigi’ I guess?

君主制；くんしゅせい；monarchy  (literally, ‘male name lord system’... oh) Should have known this one?

生態学；せいたいがく；ecology Should have known this one too. Who says you can’t learn useful words from manga.

制御；せいぎょ；control, governing, suppression, management I’ve seen this one before.

凄まじい；すさまじい；terrific; fierce; terrible; tremendous; dreadful; awful; amazing; absurd; cutthroat; intense​ Another appearance of the ‘sugoi’ kanji. Interesting how it ends in ‘jii’ instead of the usual ‘shii’. 

先天性；せんてんせい；hereditary, congenital Shoulda known this one too, thanks for the science words, Karneval!

端末；たんまつ；terminal, computer terminal, information access device (smartphone, tablet, e-reader, etc.); end (of a roll of film).  So it usually gets attached to something, like 携帯端末 or 情報端末. And it’s literally like ‘edge of the end’, like ‘terminal’. Weird!

コネ；connection, pull (as in, “Do you have some connections with the higher-ups?”)    /I see what you did there.... CONNEctions. 

落っことす；おっことす；to drop, to lose, to let fall

至らない；いたらない; imperfect, incompetent, inadequate, careless

尻拭い；しりぬぐい；cleaning up or covering for another; bearing the consequences of someone else's error; paying a debt for someone; LITERALLY  wiping another's buttocks​, wow

齎す；もたらす；to bring, to take, to bring about It seems that no other words use this kanji.

けったい；queer, weird, bizarre It must be pretty strange because I don’t remember seeing it before.

陥れる；おとしいれる；1. to trick someone into (committing a crime, etc.); to hatch a plan and deceive someone​ 2. to assault (a castle, etc.)​ 3. to drop something and have it fall into something​ I know I’ve seen this one before, but I didn’t remember, so here it is.

Harold would take control, and John knew in that moment he would be lost, the small part of him that wasn't already Harold's to do with as he pleased would be gone. Were his lips soft? Would they move quickly or go slowly, taking him apart and put him back together over and over again. The urge to find out, to take that leap and show Harold how devoted he was, how good he could be, was always present just under the surface.
