I've never read French erotica - ever. The idea of reading the words of sex, or anything carnally explicit in my native language makes my skin crawl.
That being said, I stumbled across a funny book review. The book was written by a famous former tv journalist who got fired from the channel he was working for because of some nebulous spat with one of the former French presidents. The whole ordeal happened more than a decade ago.
The review was a total roast, the book is basically a retelling of his own fall from grace under the guise of fiction : up and coming Minister gets his boxers in a twist over a journalist and uses his influence to make him pay. Guy certainly knows how to hold a grudge.
Just to clarify; the actual journalist is 70+ years old IRL.
So, that brings me to the erotica part; the roast review pulled an excerpt from the book: "Pressée par son désir, Blanche le conduisit dans son intimité."
Now, for you to understand why I puked in my mouth reading this, I'll have to translate it literally - and I apologize in advance for it. I don't usually translate to English. But from the top of my head, it'd give something like that:
"Hasted by lust, Blanche drove him into her intimacy."
(again, this is purposefully literal and serves as an example. Normally I'd use different words to make it flow better.)
So what's the issue here? Drive for starters. She drives him inside of her. I don't how you feel about this, but reading this particular combination of words gives a mental image that's light years away from being sexy. It's flat. Hasted is next, or rather "pressed", and if this sounds weird to you then just imagine how weird it is for us. What I'm picturing here is basically someone getting French-pressed, or more accurately: juiced out, which explains the wording choice in French, and blasts my yuck-meter through the roof.
I won't talk about the use of intimacy here it's... Well it's not too bad. Better than the rest really.
Which (finally) brings me back to why I don't read erotica in French, especially from contemporary authors. Not only does it melt my retinas, but it's often male authors who write it. And they write without any care for imagery, any care for what makes those scenes interesting beyond the simple mechanical act of sex. Feelings, emotions, characters, thoughts. Atmosphere.
Sex is sex. But the mechanics of it isn't what makes an erotica scene stick with you. It's like undressing someone. Peel the layers off, built tension, play with the buttons of blouse, whatever.
I want foreplay. I want your words to draw me in. Most of the time, those authors miss that crucial part.
