...How, exactly, does one go about bathing a chicken? Is there special bird shampoo? My own girls probably need a bath, but I fear their wrath...
I just have this small plastic tub that I use. I fill it up at the hose, let it sit in the sun for a bit so it’s not too cold, then swirl in some Dawn. Despite the irony, I figure that if it’s safe to use on birds pulled from oil spills, it’s safe for my chickens.
In my experience, some chickens actually seem pretty fond of water (Baby, Buck Buck’s spawn, will fall asleep in the tub with her head resting on the side). As for those birds who aren’t, it’s best to be prepared for battle. I normally only bathe them at the beginning and end of summer (so their fresh after and before winter) or if they got into something particularly nasty.
If in doubt, there’s also this amusingly illustrated wikiHow guide.

sagehaubitze: I recommend puppy shampoo! It dries out their skin less. Since my two chickens live indoors with me, they get baths on a regular basis.
