And there’s the novel done. No Deerfest to roll us out, no closure on Rose or Nightingale-just a somber conversation between Alice and Sheriff Breaker where Alice takes offense to Sheriff Breaker being on first name terms with Alan.
Whew boy.
So this book is great if you like :
Alan
Barry
Benny(Mott)
and Hartman.
If you were hoping for more Pat Maine, Agent Nightingale, Deputies Thorton and Mulligan, hell more Rusty, you’re gonna be disappointed.
Sharing more of Alan’s thoughts and fears did do a lot to humanize him a tad more than the game did and I might even like him a little more in this book but other characters like Rose really suffered in their representation.
Also blonds don’t exist.
Barbara “Darkness” Jagger’s evil laugh also kind of struck me as odd. The book and the game keep trying to convince us The Darkness isn’t human in terms of nature but it sure is smug, condescending, calculating, angry, and a lot of other things we attribute to human nature but I’ll make another post on that later.
While I enjoyed the book while I read it, I still walked away wanting more. Can’t wait for the sequel.
