name: swammarsh
appearance: swammarsh is a verdant, lush county full of wondrous flora and fauna. at night, strange lights glitter between the trees, above the water. the capital itself boasts streets and buildings made from stone, with iron lamps lighting the way through the roads twists and turns. the city is walled, to keep the swamp animals out--though this doesn’t always work. the castle is the largest part, looming over the city with it’s dark towers.
summary: it’s a very treacherous land, with wisps that guide travelers astray; dangerous plants and animals; and areas where the water deepens without much notice. there are paths and bridges built into the forest, which require regular maintenance, and a patrol. despite this, the unwary still often go missing among the trees.
there are many old ruins strung throughout the forest. one called byr’dun is one such ruin. it’s the final resting place of rose; the strange magic and creatures inside proving her downfall. swammarsh is also the city from which maddock adopted aura.
the people of swammarsh are friendly people, but also quite wary. the forest is something they have a great respect for, and not something any of them treat lightly. there are many stories about swamp witches, and how their leader is said to be descended from one. these stories are whispered in hushed tones, and only the most affable outsider would be lucky to hear them.
history:
swammarsh was said to once be a great haven of magic. deeper into the swamp there is ruins of an old school, where young witches and wizards were taught. it was said that the land of swammarsh carried its own strange magic, which is why spellcasters were drawn to it so. even now, that magic seems to persist, though whether for good or ill... well. that just depends on the day.
