There is SO much to say about today's new chapter, especially compared to what I said for the last one...so I'll get right into it!
First of all, we have the above panel from Anya which, at first, seems to debunk the whole "Donovan can read minds" theory. But I wouldn't say it totally debunks it...I still think there's been way too much evidence pointing to Donovan not being a "normal" man: the whole thing with Melinda thinking he's an alien, the awkwardly drawn-out Desmond family dinner, the fact that Endo never let's us hear Donovan's inner thoughts (is this the first time, through Anya?) There's definitely something off with him even if he can't read minds like Anya can.
Another thing I found interesting about this is the specific wording he uses in the Japanese version. He's saying it's frustrating not being able to "understand" the minds of others, which is similar to the English version, but the Japanese version is using another instance of "ateji," where it's using one kanji but pronouncing it as a different kanji.
In this case, it's written as the word 理解/rikai but pronounced as 分か/waka. Both of these words mean the same thing, "understand/comprehend." So I find it interesting that he's specifically saying he can't "understand" people's minds instead of "read." I think either 1) he actually can read minds, but still can't "understand" people, as in, he went through all the trouble of getting mind-reading powers and still can't predict or comprehend why people do things, to which Anya misinterprets as him not being able to read minds at all, or 2) he really can't read minds, but Anya learning this information is important so she, or someone else later, understands why Donovan decided to do all the research/experiments that he did.
Speaking of that, while the "Donovan can read minds" theory is a little shaky right now, there's even more evidence that he was involved in shady experiments/research, most likely with Project Apple, even if he himself wasn't a test subject. There's not only the suspicious relationship he seems to have with Chapman and Surjay, but also what we learn when Anya reads their minds initially. It seems like the first mind she reads is Chapman's, as the dialogue makes sense for someone who's on their death bed (words like "die," "dark," brain itches," etc). Then she gets to Surjay, who has the most telling thoughts like "Desmond's research" and "to...nia."
The "to...nia" line is interesting as it could be related to Anya's supposed experiment name "Ania" (which could also be related to "Ostania"). There's also the fact that some of these lines disturbed Anya so much that she couldn't sleep that night. It's normal for a child to be disturbed by thoughts like "die" and "scared," but the fact that the "Desmond's research" line is one that she thought of later too could be telling.
Unfortunately this arc left more questions than answers, especially about Donovan - are we supposed to interpret that thought of his as irrefutable evidence that he can't read minds after all, or is there something more that Anya doesn't understand? Again, I still think there's something abnormal about him related to all the research/experimentation that's been mentioned in the series, even if he can't read minds like Anya can. But for now, we're back to waiting and seeing, lol.
But hey, despite this chapter being short and not providing all the answers we'd hope, we ended on this utterly adorable scene, so I'm plenty satisfied ❤️
I want to say this arc is finally over, though the fact that Endo has been rolling one story into another since the TV hijacking arc makes me think we could now roll into an Anya backstory arc 😅Or at least, have some additional fallout with Loid coming back from the hospital. But if we go back to stand-alone, non-plot heavy chapters for a bit, I wouldn't mind. So much has been going on in the story the past few months, a breather would be nice~
So fucking cute🥹
Look, the last chapters haven't been fun for the sxf cast, but if I look at these images, I'd say it was worth it.
This is the cutest thing I've ever seen :')
This is so wholesome I am genuinely gonna pass away 🥹😭
SxF 139-2 SP ALERT

.
We talked about how brave Anya was when it came to going on missions like this.
But after all, she's still just a child and even her own power and the power of it,frighten her.
Thank goodness Yor is here to provide warmth and security to her.
I just had to draw this panel it is just too cute 🥺
I’m gonna cry, what a beautiful panel, one of the best in the whole manga. I love Yor and Anya’s bond, I love that Yor is the mama Anya needs.
