“Mochi! ” this little girl, makes me happy. She and Pon lighten my shitty times. Mochi was an adopt by my very good friend. I love her to bits. She's a cross between skeleton and a Axototl, pretty cool huh? My friend was very smart and holy shit are they adorable. She took my heart the moment my friend showed me her. Everything about her has stayed the same from when I got her, only thing I changed was I gave her a little inhaler. She's a little clueless but that just adds to the adorableness.
With his fellow friendo cat outside! :D #bjd #bjdpet #abjd #dearmine #axototl #bjdpet
Journal Response B
I really enjoyed these two short stories and I think I am becoming more and more used to the idea of Magical Realism. The stories that we are reading remind me a lot of The Twilight Zone, altered realities that we look at or read and know that they simply couldn't be true but still get intertwined with the story. Julio Cortázar did an incredible job of grabbing my attention and instead of taking notes while I read the story like I usually do, I read through the whole thing because I was so interested in what was going to happen in the Axolotl. I really liked how he compared the city to a peacock and I really got to picture how the colors came back out. I share a similar experience with staring for a long time at one thing. My senior year of high school, I went to the Fort Worth Modern Art Museum where I saw a work by Cynthia Daignault where she had gone outside every day for a whole year and painted what the sky looked like. I was mesmerized and just stood there looking at all of the blue canvases while my friends went and explored the rest of the museum so I felt a personal understanding when he stayed and watched the mysterious animals for so long. Unlike him though, I never returned so I think it is interesting that he returned day after day to admire the same animal. Axolotls are very interesting looking at but the way they were described in the story did not seem like something that would be good to watch for extended amounts of time multiple times. The way the stay still is almost eerie and makes me wonder how happy these aquatic animals are. As much as I love going to the zoo, I always worry about the restricted amount of space that they have to roam about, so when it says that the axolotls have so little space to move around that they just choose not to, that upsets me because that is a terrible life to live. They way that the man becomes more and more connected to them, makes me feel think that the man felt trapped in his own world, unable to move without getting in the way of others and messing up the environment around him. I really like the sentence on page 357 “What he didn’t notice was that it was they devouring me slowly with their eyes, in a cannibalism of gold.” This is where I noticed that the narrator sincerely believed that he was becoming an axolotl himself, becoming trapped himself and loosing his humanity. I also loved the wording of “cannibalism of gold.” Out of context, it sounds like absolute madness but when you are invested into this mans relationship with the creatures with gold eyes, it makes sense in a strange way and draws you in even more. The Night Face up was a slightly terrifying read because of the graphic details that simply aren't things that most people are used to. As I was reading this short story, it seemed to me like the man was dying and it was describing his life flashing before his eyes. He comes in and out of consciousness and sees what is happening in the hospital but this seemed like he was playing tug of war between earth and the afterlife. He focuses a lot on the sense of smell but from my experiences, hospitals always have strange smells and I think he could just be connecting the weird scents to past occurrences and it makes him think that he is currently in that situation. I shared his frustration when the men who picked him off of the road came to his side. I wanted to be reassured that it was not his fault and it was the woman who caused the accident for not looking for traffic before crossing, especially when she walked away with nothing but a few scratches while he was beaten up and broken. He took the impact because of her mistake and received the repercussions of it.
