Those aren’t father and son clothes hanging up to dry. The yellow cotton shirt and the navy blue cashmere sweater belong to my friend Simon.
The sweater, or ‘jumper’ as he calls it, was a full-size garment made to fit British-born Simon, who has a broad chest and shoulders. Unfortunately, his well-meaning ayi, or cleaning lady, threw this one into the wash. The result? A soft, sharp-looking sweater knit to fit a man who stands at about 5′11″ shrank right down to a tot-sized disaster.
Not only did it shrink, but the fibers were compressed so tightly together that the material itself now feels like a very rough grade of thick felt.
To add insult to fashion injury, a few weeks later the ayi grabbed what she thought were dirty clothes and ended up washing two more cashmere sweaters.
Luckily, the ayi won’t be ruining anymore of his clothes since Simon recently returned to Britain. Still, the tiny, ruined sweater is a reminder of what can happen when your cleaning lady can’t read washing instructions in English.
