According to Ayurveda, most ailments originate from the imbalance of the digestive system and mind. Ayurveda teaches us how to make conscious nutritional choices that are best suited for our body and mind and are harmony with our Prakruti or constitution. Food which is the life force of all living things, nourishes the body, mind and spirit and is ultimately our best medicine. This program covers all topics possible for creating wellness. It teaches us the Four Pillars of Nutrition -( food, exercise, breathing, sleep/meditation) and also healing through the five senses. This covers the aspects of Touch (self-massage), Smell (aroma therapy) – here you will also learn how to prepare blends of different oils and essential oils for creating ayurvedic products, Sight (Color therapy/gems etc), Sound (Sound and Mantra therapy), Taste (Cooking with all garden and kitchen spices for tasty and healthy food). The unique feature is that all this is subject to ascertaining an individual’s unique constitution. Nothing is generalized in Ayurveda as all aspects of healing and balance are tailored to better the quality of life and optimal health for each person. COURSE CONTENT Overview An introduction to Ayurvedic history, philosophy and core concepts such as the five elements, essential qualities (sattva, rajas and tamas), constitutional types (the tridoshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha), the theory of the “seven tissue” types as it relates to nourishment, elimination and digestion, etc. Ayurvedic Nutrition – Theory and Practice Topics covered will include: the four pillars of nutrition; the 6 tastes (rasas) and 20 qualities; lifestyle and diet as preventive medicine; healing through the five senses (i.e. color therapy, sound therapy, aromatherapy,touch therapy and taste therapy ), the relation between digestion, emotions and metabolism; how to decrease toxicity and increase immunity; designing diet guidelines based on constitutional type; food combining and incompatibilities; using food to revitalize skin and hair; health and vegetarianism; and how Western nutritional research and Ayurveda approach to nutrition can complement each other. Differences between western and Ayurveda approach to nutrition Define calorie intake and the three main food groups. Identify carbohydrates (simple sugar, complex carbs and fiber). Identify proteins (vegetarian and animal sources), Identify fats(monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, saturated and transfat) . Learn how to portion control. Learn how to quantify carbohydrate count for portion and blood glucose control. Learn how to read a food label. Food preparation and the Designing of Dietary Regimens We will explore: ingredient selection; hygiene and sanitation; food preservation; optimal cooking strategies to preserve nutritional potency; the use of herbs, spices and condiments to enhance wellness; beverages; healthy desserts; the use of ghee, oil, yogurt, honey and essential oils in foods; and detoxifying and rejuvenating diets. How to Perform an Ayurvedic Nutritional Consultation Students learn how to examine and analyze the tongue, pulse, eyes, nails and skin, to determine constitutional type and overall condition and advise clients on a range of issues including improving digestion, weight loss, controlling food cravings and menopause. Yoga and Ayurveda We will discuss the use of yoga as a healing discipline and therapeutic aid. We will look at the core aspects of yogic philosophy, drawing from the classic text, Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, and students will learn specific yogic practices to enhance digestion boost overall vitality and manage stress. These include postures, meditation, Pranayama and breathing techniques. Business and Management Guidance To prepare graduating students for the real world, detailed practical advice on how to manage their holistic healing practice is offered. CASE STUDIES: During the training, students will have the opportunity to work with 5 clients under the supervision and guidance of Dr. Naina Marballi. This is a crucial intermediate step. It offers budding counselors a chance to build their confidence and solidify their understanding and skills, so they are then fully ready to make the leap to becoming independent practitioners.
