Healing my inner black kid that felt dysphoria when fellow class mates pointed out how hairy I was. This was the encouragement I needed, only Muriel has a momentarily lapse in confidence because of a silly human’s comment. I don’t think it’d haunt them they’d just take a while to realise they’re non binary!

You’re allowed to be hairy and be a girl. But having hair on your body definitely does not make you a boy. What makes you a boy or a girl, man or a woman, neither or both, or something else entirely is the feeling that you just are. Your body isn’t who you are. Who you are is what you do and how you feel and what you think, how you express yourself is who/what you are.

So a lot of us can agree Aziraphale and Crowley present their gender in non cisgender ways, right? Cool.

So jumping off of that, I was thinking, what makes parts of the fandom see Aziraphale as a non-gendered being, more than Crowley? Why is it he dresses in a suit and coat hes kept since the 1800s?

My thinking is, it's cause while Aziraphale doesn't identify with society's concept of gender in the usual sense, because gender is a type of costume. So what is Aziraphale cosplaying as? Why does he embody the image of an old sofa?

Cause that's what he is.

He is an old fabric sofa, worn in from generations of sitting. Brown fabric fading in places people have found comfort in its aged cushions. An equally old, tartan blanket lays, neatly placed on the backrest, ready to be unfolded when the cold days settle in. The sofa is the sun's best friend, in each other's line of sight through the window on the living room. Every day he rises, they say good morning to one another as they pass by.

Or perhaps a mug, that's been through decades of service? The design on the outside has been carefully preserved... but the inside? The inside shows years of service. Old scars made from spoons scratching the base and sides. Marks left behind in an attempt to mix thousands of spoons of sugar into a warm drink. This is your father's favourite mug, because his mother made it for him before she passed. The ghost of her hands, shaping the clay as they did so long ago, lay on top of your father's every time he holds it with both hands.

Aziraphale's gender also feels like a well-loved, tattered quilt. Fraying at the edges, with old stains that weren't washed out well enough. It's still warm. It still shows your mother's skill with knitting needles. She spent years crafting it for you before you turned 10. She's always surprised to see you still have it when she visits.

I could go on and on and on... but the point is that Aziraphale embodies a sort of comfort. Of love. Of safety from things intended to hurt you. He is the warm blanket you swaddle yourself in. He is the dent in the sofa cushions. He is the perfect amount of hot coccoa after work.
