honestly i think the mage-templar war is uniquely stupid and simply cannot take it seriously. if we were going to have a discussion about oppression, centering the elves would genuinely have been a better way to do it than putting SO much emphasis on mages because *taliesin jaffe voice* it's a broken metaphor! everyone can agree that the circles go too far and the way the templars operate is wrong, but when you establish a group of people that can and DO become possessed with comparative ease that then slaughter large groups of innocents and/or just are people with the capability to enact far greater violence than your average person with only the power of their mind, you are not creating a great environment to explore the topic of oppression in any meaningful way. the system requires heavy reformation, but circles are not inherently bad ideas and the skills used by the templar order are probably very good things to be maintained in the event of a possession, which is genuine threat

now that you’re done with me2 i’m curious about your thoughts on the characters so far! who do you like, who are you not vibing with? 👀

honestly, i should have diversified my group more when i was playing because i swear the second i got both tali and garrus and i was like welp. they're my team permanently now, so i didn't get to spend a TON of time with most of new companions. tali and garrus are no notes, my beloveds. tali is my best friend, garrus has a quip for every situation and the same negative rizz of aveline vallen, what's not to love. leading favorites among the newer crew are: zaeed (who i WISH had more content, but alas he is a dlc companion), mordin, and jack. they're are all very...very ME characters. especially zaeed and jack. mordin snuck up on me with how much i liked him, actually. really interesting character with some great introspection in his storyline. it beggers belief that jack in unromanceable by another woman, though, and i will go to my grave mad about it. like, i don't even care that cassandra dragonage is straight, but JACK? the game is lying to me

jacob continues to confuse the hell out of me. what is his vibe. he has strong opinions about everything but i feel like we never get to properly follow up on them, though I suppose this could have been because i avoided talking to him much on account of the uh. the horrors. his strong dislike of thane really stands out, like, I was expecting an argument to drop up between the two of them or something, but it didn't. and i didn't take thane around much, but his vibes on the radio during the hold the line section of the suicide mission were so hilariously blasé that i'm kind of entranced, in addition to his incredible terrible-father-rizz. however, his giant black frog eyes freak me out so idk if i could get past that to ever do his romance. love his medically required slutty open shirt look, though.

I appreciate miranda for who she is, but she is tragically not a rosie character, and/or i just need to spend more time with her. ranking her a mid-tier character for now. kasumi has VERY cool vibes, but again not a ton of content as a dlc character, though her loyalty quest was great. i honestly have no strong feelings about grunt, i don't really know where i stand on him. also i may haves tright up forgotten about him while i was drafting this, if that tells you anything. my biggest memory of him is of the fucking thresher maw i had to kill during his companion quest, but i don't dislike him. I just don't really have strong feelings on him right now. and I recruited samara last, but her storyline was wild (affectionate) and she has such a comforting, mom-like vibe when she's not bringing up how she'd kill me in any other circumstances. we stan.

also i've had legion for only a couple of hours but legion is VERY cool. I will die on the hill of thinking legion and shepard have insane chemistry, albeit I don't have much else to say because, well. i've only had legion for a couple of hours.

i have an enduring affection for the me1 companions and those who were not available as full companions in me2 are SO missed by me, though i feel like my least popular opinion might be that liara doesn't interest me basically at all. not sure how much of it is personal opinion vs character bleed because she and me shep just had such divergent personalities in the first game, but I like her shadow broker arc a lot, though. i really do like that development, even if my feeling on her in general are more mixed.

Her toes barely touched the floor, and mostly just for balance. “Just like that,” he murmured under his breath in a soothing rumble. She hated to admit it, but she was soothed by it. “Now, put one foot on mine—” he nudged one of his long-toed feet under hers, giving her a platform to “stand” on. “And the other.” He did the same on the other side. “What is this?” She asked wryly, though she realized his intent now. She’d done this before, when she was clumsy and small, held in loving arms that tried to show her the steps to a waltz. “You can’t walk,” he said, bracing one arm around her waist and gently grasping her good hand in his. Accommodatingly, she let her bad hand rest on his shoulder. “But I think you can dance, Shepard.” “You’re the first and only person to think that, then,” she said.

opinion on fenhawke? 👀

in the grand scheme of things, i haven't played that many games, let alone games with romances, but of the ones that i've played, fenhawke is my favorite video game romance. had an absolute chokehold on me from the second i first played it, which is a little bit funny because when i started da2 i was SO sure i wasn't going to do it (fun fact: i actually thought i'd romance anders, albeit i abandoned that plan by the end of his recruitment mission). all i knew about fenris was that he was popular and i really wanted to be different but I wasn't and i'm not mad at it at all because fenhawke is fantastic. the three-year breakup is inspired, angsty and juicy, there's this tragic and really beautiful symmetry about starting the game with the conversation "what do you do when you stop running?"/"you look around, take a breath, and start anew" and then ending the game on the run once again. it's about how much family matters to both of them, above and beyond anything else. it's about teaching him how to read (WHILE THEY'RE BROKEN UP), it's about him wearing a lady's favor like a tourney knight and proudly wearing her family's crest on his belt (WHILE THEY'RE BROKEN UP), it's about someone who spent his life in bondage saying, without hesitation, "i am yours" (WHILE THEY'RE BROKEN UP). it's about ROMANCE, and FAMILY, and SLOW BURN, and FRIENDS TO LOVERS.

okay but beyond all my positive rantings, my other opinion is much less popular here and it's that while i understand why so many people pair fenris with a mage hawke, i just have absolutely no interest in that version of the story. like, has the man not already been through enough. also mage hawke denies you the BETHANY of it all as a parallel with virania which i think is SUCH a great aspect of the non-mage hawke/fenris relationship, given the importance of family to them both. also i'm a friendmance stan here, i've seen the rivalmance and i'm honestly not fond of it. non-mage friendmance ALL THE WAY for me

1- What's the worst thing that could happen to them? Would/could it ever happen? (Marnie)

It could and it has: it's the beginning of me2. Leaving the low-hanging fruit alone (the entire Colonist backstory), the situation she finds herself in at the opening of me2 really is worst nightmare material. I was thinking about it as I was finishing me1, but her journey in that game felt very much like a closed off person slowly opening up to the people around them and, like. making genuine progress to become a better person. She was ready to turn over a new leaf by the end of it! And then all of that just gets blown to pieces at the start of me2. Turns out dying, getting resurrected by a terrorist organization, treated more like a tool than a person, and losing everything she took a chance to get attached to on the original Normandy is not good for someone's mental health. Having multiple people tell you that your old crew has "moved on" at the beginning specifically was so cutting to her. The firs time she bothered to really care about other people again and she lost it all. again. That's why she was so out of control at the beginning of the game and why I couldn't find any justification for her to take the paragon path during Zaeed's mission--she didn't have anything good to lean back on. All she had was this really fruitless anger she had nowhere to direct. Giving in to that anger felt good when she didn't have anything else. This is also why recruiting Garrus was such a turning point--it was her one connection to something better that she thought she'd lost completely.

2- How differently do they act in public vs private? (Marnie)

Pretty differently, honestly. In public, she's always bristling and ready to fight. It's more defense mechanism than anything, but she really come across as very intense in public and quite mean, honestly. She's very forwardly aggressive unless it's like, a professional setting. In which case she will act professional. She's honestly got a lot of professionalism, that matters to her.

In private, I think she's pretty quiet and withdrawn. She's still, like, a very intense person, but in private it comes across more as a deep, lonely melancholy. Instead of angry or aggressive or mean she becomes sullen and aloof. If she's really relaxed she might start cracking deadpan gallows humor jokes, too lmao

3- How do they feel about Cerberus resurrecting them? (Tabby)

Only Shepard I have ever played who came back to life and went, "Wait, I'm alive? Rad." She doesn't care about any of the implications, she's just glad to be alive. She wanted to be alive and as long as Cerberus can't control her, well, it doesn't really matter what they did to her, now does it? It just matters that she's back and she can do what she wants. Because of this, Tabby is also like the only Shepard I've done to authentically be good friends with Liara in me3. They have wildly different personalities, but Tabby likes her. They're friends and she's glad, honestly, that Liara helped her come back to life.

"When's the last time your OC hurt someone emotionally? What did they do?" for hawke!

1- The first thing to come to mind is honestly that me1 side quest with corporal toombs. the renegade choice in that quest is to kill the cerberus scientist for toombs because shepard can do it legally, and i think it really was a well-intentioned action from her (albeit one that's tied up a lot in her personal guilt over getting her team killed on torfan, as are, well, many of her actions in me1). and it's a background detail, but if you kill the scientist, in me2 there's not enough evidence to publicize the incident and toombs doesn't get any legal justice. she certainly meant well at the time, but uh. might not have been as beneficial a choice in the long run as it felt in the moment. she copes with this the same way she copes with everything else: shoving it into a little box at the back of her brain and refusing to think about it or consider her actions in any meaningful way. *dreamily* what a woman

2- i think the two most hurtful things hawke has ever done were both to fenris, which is kind of tragic lmao. you really can't top sneaking out and leaving him behind to go join the inquisition, maybe with the intention of dying to fix your previous mistakes. i think that one was pretty hurtful and that's like. base canon, too. before that, though, in the act 2 romance scene with him, there's a really insensitive comment purple hawke makes about how if he's getting his memories back during sex they'll need to have more of it, and i always choose that option because it's SO insensitive. purple hawke always strikes me as a character that is so prone insensitivity, and i love that as a character detail because it's very messy and real for that personality type. they use humor as a shield so much they forget they can easily hurt people they care about with it, too. i do so love flaws and terrible coping mechanisms and bad personalities
