Photo by Erin Lefevre (@erinlefevrephoto) In honor of the front line horses that had to be put down after being shot by the militarized police in Standing Rock: Jerica Meditz's new horse, Shota, drinks water from a stream at the Sacred Stone Camp in Cannon Ball, North Dakota. The Standing Rock Horse Society gave the horse to Jerica after he was kicked and injured by another horse at the camp. My favorite white Converse shoes were destroyed in the making of this photograph after being ankle deep in the mud, but it was worth it. The Dakota Access Pipeline is a 1,172 mile pipeline that spans from North Dakota to Illinois under the Mississippi and Missouri River and will carry 470,000 barrels of Canadian crude oil per day. The pipeline, which violates numerous federal laws and Indian treaties, would destroy the #water supply of over 18 million people if the water becomes contaminated with oil- water that is used for drinking, agriculture, and numerous ecosystems. I am documenting the ongoing movement against the pipeline in North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Illinois.” - #standingrock #DakotaAccessPipeline #watercrisis #azdarya (at Sacred Stone Camp)
