Photo by Andrew Quilty (@andrewquilty) - "Flying over Afghanistan shows how dependent its population is on water. Aside from the mountainous central and northern provinces, to look at, the country is 99 percent dessert; except, that is, for the valleys where rain and snowmelt feed rivers and decades-old-canals that turn the crops either side verdant and green in the warmer months and sustain a population – 85 percent of whom rely on agriculture for their livelihood. So it's rare to see a body of still #water like this one in Nangarhar Province - the last foot or two remaining on a sandy flood plain before it's replenished by the spring thaw in the Hindu Kush mountains to the north." #andrewquilty @washpostphoto #watercrisis #afghaniatan #azdarya (at Nangarhar Province)
