Idk if you've read them, but I recommend AZRE, The Beast of Beacon and In Death are you redeemed!

AZRE is a full on rwby rewrite that takes place several years before canon, with Adam leaving the WF in search for Blake (their relationship is that of a brother and sister) and finding his way to Beacon. It has some ocs but all of them are very well-written and you end up being just as interested in their story!

Beast of Beacon features Adam, once again following Blake outside of the WF joining team RWBY instead of her. His path to redemption is definitely a struggle but it is well-written. I do feel though that the author kind of brushes off the abuse storyline we get in canon but that might just be me. Also, there is some Yang x Adam shipping that's not my cup of tea but the way their relationship is written it did make me like the ship a little more - y'know, in an AU.

In Death is a series of separate 1 to 3 chapter fic. Unlike Azre and Beast of Beacon, In Death tries to pull Adam's character out of the gutter *after* we get the whole canon mess up. The storytelling is non-linear and is basically about Adam surviving his fight with Blake and Yang and starting a long, painful and difficult process of becoming self-aware.

All 3 of those recommend fics dive deeper in world building than canon and explore the racism faunus face. A warning is that In Death *is* a little bit darker and has a more mature feel to it, whereas AZRE especially manages to capture the overall tone of canon rwby. In Death also features a darker take on Adam's backstory so if you decide to read it, make sure to check out the warnings. And similarly to the other fics there are some ocs from what I've seen but they are once again pretty well-written and are really not an issue. And I say that as someone who usually dislikes ocs.

AZRE and In Deat Are You Redeemed can be found on AO3 whereas Beast of Beacon is only on FF.net, I think.

I've checked out Beast of Beacon already, but I'll give the other two a look!
