U.S. solar reaches new highs, overtakes No. 1 spot for new energy

Solar energy has reached new highs in the United States on two important fronts. It surfaced as the largest source of new energy across the nation and installation of solar systems reached a new high record, too.

The numbers behind this overtaking soared as solar developers installed 14.6 gigawatts in the United States last year, representing a doubling of total installations from the previous year.

Of the 40 markets tracked by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), 31 of them grew, including areas where traditional energy sources had gripped the market, according to the report.

SEIA’s chief executive said solar energy and technology provides a winning combination across all market segments.

A national survey of solar use among corporate entities shows significant increases to solar investment.   

From tech giants to major retailers and other business enterprises, leaders have installed more than 1,280 megawatts of new commercial solar power last year, the second largest annual gain in history.   

Apple, Amazon and Walmart lead the way, increasing their solar capacity by 35 percent in 2019. Apple plans to rely on 100 percent carbon neutral energy sources for its supply chain and products by 2030.

Solar prices reach historic lows

The International Energy Agency’s World Energy Outlook concludes that solar energy applications are less expensive than coal and gas in most major countries around the world.   

That’s also great news for the planet’s environmental health. Models show the rise of renewable energies and the decline of oil demand will help put a lid on CO2 emissions, making a significant contribution to our efforts to fight back against climate change.  

The agency, a leading authority on global energy systems and the future of energy, predicts explosive growth in the solar industry as more home and business owners realize the value and competitive pricing of solar.   

By 2040, there will be 43 percent more solar output as more consumers get access to clean and affordable energy alternatives, according to the outlook report.
